I just called my friend and he says its just a stronger peice of line that i tie to my existing line and then to my rig
is this right?
How long does it need to be?
will the tackle shop have individual shock leaders or do i need to buy another line and start snipping and tieing? |

Hi,
If you havn't found the knots link in the menu on the left, I would suggest that you have a look. Theres some good animated knots for shockleaders, hooks, swivels etc. It's where I learned the basic knots when I started.
Good luck |

tie it on to your main line, then wind it on to your reel about 5times, round, that should do,so when its done you cast with the shockleader and not the main line, |

Basically when you cast out you need a stronger line at the beginning to withstand the power of your cast otherwise a normal 15-18lb breaking strain line would do just that- break- and send the line and lead etc flying- so for every ounce of weight you are using you need ten times that as a shock leader- generallyy for beach casting- 5-6 oz weights are used so unless you are using a heavier lead weight a 60lb shock leader line should do you- yuo will need to join the leader line to your main line and put around fifteen turns of the leader line around youreel so that it takes effect- the next question you will prob askis the same one I did- how you tie the leader line on- if you look on earlier threads on this forum you willsee a link to Neil Mackellow's website which shows a standard leader knot which is simple and the one I use (basically a grinner knot which grips onto a half hitch)- another member says to use a bimini - which is definitle y stronger but I'm crap and can't tie it |

thank you to everyone who has answered what must seem to be easy questions.
I'll pop down the tackle shop today and hopefully get fishing this afternoon ! |
