| did 1300-1800 nr the tower using squid and rag but no fish , my son caught wat we tghink was a weaver in a net he was using to get crabs and my old man caught the groin things . everytime we reel in we had no bait , how long should we keep the rods out ? |

well i dont know your end of the country very well , but if their is crab activity (stripping yourbaits off) then aim for about ten minutes,less if the crabs are really bad, up to about 15 20 mins per cast, if your getting bites and not hooking try sizing down your hooks and baits, try some different rigs like 3 hook clipped or flappers, when the tide is running use longer hook snoods and when hardly any tide use short snoods and possibly try a plain lead to let the baits roll about a bit an dpossibly pick up fish.

I agree with what the boys have advised, what I tend to keep in my fishing bag is the small polystyrene balls, the same which is used for packing. Placing a small piece of the poly on the hook length will if you have the ratio right [ bait size to poly float] this will float the bait off the sea bed, the tide will keep it away from the main line so crabs will not reach it quite so easily, it can be removed quickly when needed, it will also act as an attracter lure.

If the fish in the net was a dark colour it would be a rockling, there are loads of them at the base of the concrete. If your hooks are coming in clean you need to rebait more often, simple as that. You can help yourself by either putting a float on the trace to help slow the crabs down, or putting on larger baits (or both) but ultimately you should rebait every 15 to 20 mins.
Fish at night with mackerel strip .... the river is full of whiting at the moment. |

| cheers mudlark next time im offf down there ill take ya advice , this weekend im off to try a day on walton pier with the old man and the boy to try our (bad ) luck there lol |
