Rusty hooks!

Even several steel hooks (which must be rare) in a fish's gut (or yours) will eventually corrode away but a stainless hook stays forever - which would you prefer?

If I had to have a bit of metal in me I'd rather stainless steel. You can die from peretinitus if you like. Interestingly, stainless steel corodes too, even the highest grades. Thats because all stainless steels are alloys to enable it to be shaped or forged.

Have you ever caught a fish with a hook already in it's mouth? I have once in 25 years of sea angling (and 1,000s of fish). Everyone will get broken off by a fish so it should happen more often if they don't shed the hooks quickly?

Yes Martin, I am aware that Stainless Steel corrodes, even 316 which is the one containing 2 to 5 % Molybdenum to improve corrosion resistence. My former company used to make the stuff. The principle corrosion resisting material in stainless steel is Chromium (above 12 %) because it forms a very thin (1-2 microns) layer of Chromium Oxide on the surface of the steel which provides the protection. However, Chromium is a poisonous heavy metal - not good in your insides or mine which is why surgeons use Cobalt or Titanium based alloys for human prostheses not stainless steel. It is the chlorides in seawater which eventually will manage to corrode stainless steel but it takes a long time. I very much doubt if fish are likely to get PERONTINITIS from any kind of hook as the condition is caused by bacteria not steel, usually from a burst appendix. Oh BTW I have several times caught fish over wrecks with more than one hook in them - do you do wreck fishing?

The singular of "viscera" is "viscus" meaning in Latin "an organ of the body."

its a good habit to get into, washing off hooks and swivels etc before you put rigs back in your wallet ive always been told........ that way you can also give your hooks a good looking at to make sure the points havent rolled over and that any swivels/clips arent broken, because you wouldn't want to be teeing up for a big cast, and have the swivel joining your trace to your shockleader break would you ( or anybody standing within 200ft of you ) ?????
