What brand/type of oil should I be using for lubricating my reel?
I need to clean mine down & re-lube it, but I assume 10/40w engine oil is not the right stuff  |

ABU make a silicote grease and a special oil for this purpose. You should remove as much of the old oil and grease as possible and apply new grease and oil as per recommendation for your type of reel.Penn also produce specific oils and reel grease. You'll find this stuff on ebay for a few quid.Another alternative is to take your reel to an angling shop that provides servicing for reels and have it 'tuned' at the same time. While this is more expensive you won't have the nightmare scenario of not being able to put thing back together after you've stripped it down! |

in the past i used specialised oil, but you will find that 3 in one multipurpose oil will do the job just as well,--but if you want to use an alternative,-red rocket for slowing down [hot weather] yellow rocket oil to speed up,[cold weather]--hope this helps |

I use the Rocket Fuel that came with my Penn Mags, but a guy I know who is a very good caster just uses 3 in 1 oil.

im a fan of modifying reels to their max, and they run like a dream except for odd birds nests. i have a special way of lubeing my reels, rempve the side plate with the brakes in and then rmove the spool. fill a small dish with enough wd40 to cover the bearings then soak the bearings in the wd40 (duck oil is even betetr but ahrd to find) this is to remove rubbish, then i do the same but with a 3 in 1 oil. then with a pair of tweezers to hold the bearings i give them a good coat of wd40 again
oh and with the handle side of the reel just spray some oil in and hope for the best , if i spray oil is too fine for you dont give it a final coat of wd40 as i do but trust me it really increases the reel speed.
sorry if my instructions are patchy but im me:D
and to answer your initial question just use spray can oils lol |

oh also thinkign slightly outside the box but still on the line of oils as a mountain biker we use all sorts of different stuff for different reasons, such as fine oils remove dirt but wash off easily and heavier but stickier oils stay put but trap dirt. There was a brilliant fluid i discovered that was multi purpose, it was as fine as wd40 but clung to bike chains like dog poop to a new shoe... i cant remember its name but if you search around you should be able to find it. |
