hi

maybe this is wrong forum but anyway. i am going to purchase a shakespeare 12/20lb boat rod (£20) and i have a okuma zrixon reel that isnt for sea fishing but i think it would be ok to fit this rod. i am just wanting to fish for flatfish a few wrasse and bass etc off our boat and im hoping the tip is very sensative. im not going for monster conger etc. i have a pic of the reel before i loaded it with 15lb red ice line. just tell me what you think.

I don`t have the model number right now but pm me and I`ll answer when I get home in 2 weeks and Let you know.
Use the reel you have `til then as you won`t get a better reel than I can let you have for the money including postage!!!!! suprise

I agree with dazza, a multiplier is a much better option for boat fishing because it is so much easier to alter the depth at which you are fishing than it is with a FS. Also if you can afford it??, get one with lever drag and level wind. Winding ratio should be 4.5:1 or maybe a bit better.

If you haven`t got the boat rod yet i think you would be better off getting an 8-9ft uptider as they are far more versatile than a 6 ft boat rod and the fixed spool reel would be okay with it for light boat, pier or short range beach fishing , should be able to get a shakey or diawa for £25.
If you go for a boat rod i advise you go for a 7ft6 or 8ft 30lb class and multiplier to match .

I understand sniggle's comments but prefer a rod around 6' 6" meself - far easier to handle on a small boat. My favourite boat rod is actually a Shekespeare Ugly Sapphire 1.95 metres/20 lb. Did not cost a lot and have had many good outings with it in our dinghy.

If you want a little 6ft rod to play with the macks and gars go car booting and you can pick one up for a couple of quid, i bought the top section of a carbon carp rod for a pound and put a butt from another trashed spinning rod on it , its a great little rod but little rods need little reels to match so don`t put your big fixed spool reel on and expect it to feel balanced.
Ps. with an uptider you can have the rod sticking out the back of the boat and still be in grabbing range when the 5 lb bass whacks the bait , not so easy with a short rod.

personally i wouldnt use that reel for a boat as the line capacity on it isnt big enough and i think yo should take the 15lb line off as youll only have around 100 yards on it. you shgould replace it with probably 6-10lbs line then you have a decent capacity

i think thats what it says on the spool---0.15-310

that diameter is only around 4lbs?

i might be wrong but i think thats what it says????
