Hi mate, don't waste peelers on wrasse, hardbacks are what you need and you can catch them on a crab line or find them under rocks.
To hook pull a back leg off and thread the hook through the socket keeps them lively under a float, the ideal crab would be about 50p size, hope this helps. |

Hi geggy_poos
You can find peelers down the beach under rocks and seaweed. you need to scrape the sand or mud away as the peelers tends to bury themselves slightly out of harms way. They peel at different times of the year depending what part of the country you are at. The hens (female crabs) peel before mating so look for small crabs under larger cock crabs and the cocks(male crabs) peel after mating.
To check to see if a crab is a peeler just pinch off the tip of one leg and if it is a peeler it will have an identical soft leg underneath. |

You need to peel all the shell from the peeler to leave an identical but soft crab that is within. If you pull the carapace from the crab and there is not a soft shell underneath and all you can see is it's guts then it was not a peeler. Once you have peeled all the shell, mouth parts and any other bony bits you can feel, the crab will be dead so don’t worry about your line.
If you hook a live hardback as mentioned by Welchy it probably wont be able to reach your line.
The only crabs you have to worry about cutting your line is the robbing spider crabs if you are fishing on the bottom but i think most of them have headed back out to deeper water. |

I have not had much trouble with them for the last few weeks down here on the south coast perhaps then it is because i am using the little bliters as bait for the hounds |
