just wondering, after putting new line on a reel yesterday and experiencing several bad birds nests last night... how doi you load your line onto a reel?
i use my mulitplier on a coarse fishing rod butt that i broke a while back, its got just one eye on the section i use so i thread it up and tie a grinner knot to the spool of the reel , then i apply pressure directly to the line by nipping it between thumb and finger.
i make a mound either side of the reels spool and one in the centre and then level it out.
why did i get so many birds nests! its good line and my reels set right! |

I'm definitely no expert as I am a beginner especially with multipliers but I was told to criss cross the line (if that makes sense) when loading it rather than trying to get it level- apparently it stops the fresh line embedding itself into the earlier winds and helps to prevent bad birds nests if there's an over-run.
It works for me |

Thom is this a brand of line you have used lots before as it sounds to me like your doing it just right!!! practically text book stuff, only thing is, do you let the line off the spool it comes on straight or let it peel off the side of the spool :?: I find that putting the nylon spool on a pencil or pen and get the Mrs to apply a little tension and to hold that level with the reel spool so it winds straight ??? causes a few arguments tho` 8O |

We all get sessions when our reels misbehave for no apparent reason, if you have mag cast control you can slow the reel down easily there and then, if it's got centrifugal brakes then it's obviously a little bit more involved. I usually find that if a reel is starting to ' fluff ' it needs some more oil in the bearings.

Thom, had a similar problem a while back. Loaded normal line (son holding line spool-wouldn't dare ask missus!) took it out and spent most of the session auditioning for a part as a blackbird! After months of snag free casting, I had a period of three or four weeks where I just couldn't get it right. Two casts and bam! Ended up back on the fixed spool every time. I'd washed and oiled the damn thing regularly. Turned out that I'd actually put too much oil on and the brakes were sticking. Now, I dismantle everything, clean it and start from scratch everytime I reload. Since then, no problems. |

in response to whoever asked about the line type/brand, its the sakuma line and yes i have used all the colours lots of times before, im taking the reel back out tonight and going to stick my brakes back on before i go, i mean who normally uses brakes anyway lol! ive recently started using a very fine oil in a spray form which did cause a few problems until i got used to the speed of the reel, however the week before my problems started we had the roughest sea in ages literally years and there was alot of spray, maybe something has been eaten into by the salt? |

I tend to find that if you use thick line that has a tendensey to coil up when salt gets at it it holds its shape around the spool . so when you cast it seems to coil or loop up on cast which inturn seems to increase my chances of nests. maybe this is just me but when i changed to a better quality line the nesting does not seem to happen as much no matter how i load my multiplyer. Keeping the spool evenly loaded seems to do the trick for me! |
