If you're bottom fishing expect plenty of losses and use heavy snoods for the the big wrasse!
The Swanage tackle shp are the best for advice, they may advise floating unless you know the venue really well.
Agree on the tide, too much kelp on the ebb. |

only from the pier - for mackerel. Had some fun picking them up (strangely) on silver blue Rapala X-Rap several weeks ago, very exciting as they were taking the lure close to the pier. Out of the green and then whack within a few feet. It was brilliant.
other times I have been and used dexters and caught nothing.
no bass from the pier on lures for me out of about 5 visits this summer. They could be good at the Point but would have to be floating or skitter pop - too much weed for divers. |

just about everything you need to know about bass and wrasse from Peveril Point is here, Mike Ladle used to fish with the Swanage Club.

The pier is not fishing well at the moment although a local had a few mackerel and black bream last Saturday when I was there. Float fish about 9 foot deep off the pier, the books that say 3 - 4 feet are wrong !

I love reading his articles but many are badly out of date these days, particularly his description of some bass venues and what might be there. The entrance to the Fleet at Ferrybridge is a classic example. I think many of the bass are gone (in terms of numbers) and the venue has changed almost beyond recognition with the relatively recent concrete bridge. I could be wrong but I have been disappointed when spinning from under the bridge or from the boat yrd.
Ineviatblly 20 yrs+ on there are new and productive venues due to changes in rules (e.g. bass nursery areas and their success) and local environments.
There is a very easy spot to pick up decent sized wrasse at Poole entrance and it gets missed by the people fishing there most of the time because a cast 10-15 feet from the rocks is too far. If you fish worm baits from the 1st groyne by bottom fishing right under the end of the groyne you will catch ballan wrasse. Some are large and need heavy tackle to be hauled out of the rocks. A local snorkeller reckons there are also some small conger. Only this groyne is productive for wrasse, I suspect because it is so close to a deep channel and juts out into relatively 'deep ' and fast water. |
