Please post your Tactics / Tips on how to catch Mackerel in your local area here. Please remember in this part of the forum to click the reply button to post and Not the "New Post" button Also one main point to remember is that these new forums are intended to help totally new sea anglers to the sport so please post in great detail type of rods/reels used, explain about traces/rigs used, depth to fish and so on or anything else I have missed that you feel will help the novice sea angler.

Theres no sport in using feathers, its easy.
Fish a light float rig on a light carp rod or spinning rod uing either strips of mackerel or live sandeel. Start fishing at about 10 feet deep and mess around with the depth until you get one. This can catch you mackerel and just as easy garfish which are just as fun. Youll definitely have more fun this way. If you fish a little deeper you can also pick up pollack.
Around Plymouth it tends to fish better over high water, i normally fish the last 2 hrs up and 1st 2 down.

hi,

i do feather for mackerel but only as i do catch them to eat and only fish for a hour or so at a time.

timming wise, i find it best to start fishing 4 hours before the tide is all the way in! this is of chesil anyway and nearly all fish are of a real nice size.

trace wise, i use bog standard very cheap 4 hook feathers of the white only type and of course a 6oz weight lobbed as far as i can get it but i do not whip back the rod in between reeling in, just pull back and wind in

Mumbles pier is nice for Mack because theres usually hundreds!!! I take a carp rod and a beach caster or a pier rod. on the carp rod put a reasonable size weight on and cast and bring in and you will most likely atleast have one on a cast! beach catser or pier rod i plummet down for smoothies!!!
