This reel was designed originally as a boat reel, after saying that it can be pressed in service as a casting reel but do not expect to cast great distances with it. Construction is pretty sound and the finish reasonable. I suspect that the prices on orkney are inflated due to transportation costs, they are certainly over and above what we pay on the mainland. I would have expected to pay in the reigon of £35 to £42 for the same reel here. Sorry to disappoint you but you can take heart in the fact that you have a good reel for uptiding from a boat and that it should last years with proper maintenance. keith |

hi mate, i bought one of these reels to learn how to use a multiplier and i think u made the right choose to start off. to load the reel feed the line through the 2 guide bars that move when you reel, tie the line to the spool and reel the line on ( its a bit easier if you put the reel onto a rod). hold the line a little bit tight so that it goes neatly onto the reel with no loose bits, do this until you have enough line , tie a leader , and your ready. to cast with the reel, hold your right thumb (if your right handed) on the line and flick the black switch so that the line is able to run. cast as you do , remove your thumb at the point you want to release the rig, and heres the important part, watch your rig and as the weight is about to hit the water apply your thumb back to the line enough to stop it but let the tackle settle to the bottom afterwards. if you do not apply any pressue and you rig hits the water then your reel will birdsnest and leave you with a huge knot (be prepared for this , it will happen) . im not the best fisherman here but this works for me. before you try it out set the brake(small wheel) quite tight and have a few casts with only a 4-6 oz weight and you should get the hang of it (i went to local playing fields to get to grips with it, just try to stop the weight before it hits the glass, or again you will get tangled up).
hope this helps |

when i had that reel i used a shakespeare tidewater 12' beachcaster, this was only £20 in the local market , but most beachcaster , pier, or boat rod's will do . if your just fishing the coast then i would just buy a cheap beachcaster , even though they are cheap they still catch the fish. |

Like welsh said!!
I tried a ron thompson'Pioneer',my friends pissed himself laughing at me saying it wouldn't last, after just 2 casts the ratchet jammed itself on!
I took it back to glasgow angling centre and exchanged it with some cash for an abu 6500c powerhandle with level wind,so much better and deff worth the extra cash!! |

Another vote for save up for a propper "casting" multiplier. Learning to cast a multiplier with what is essentialy a boat real is no fun at all (speaking from experience) |

all i am going to say is good luck casting it if you can master it then you got a good reel but dont get upset if you bird nest it i always say practise makes perfect i got the old mitchell 604 it dont have the two bars on so you to level the line yourself with your thumb it's easy now with the twin bars on it does it for you all you do is reel in |
