Co Clare,

A great spot for the Bass I’m planning a trip to seafield in a few hours I aint had a Bass on the fly rod yet but I will give it a go if I keep with the plan,

I heard of John Dory being caught further down the coast and will have a go for them if everything works out for me during the week, cool

plenty of schoolie bass only 2 rod lengths out in Poulnasherry bay.should take a fly if you are lucky. If not do you have any patterns that will take dogfish cos there was no shortage of them yesterday angry

HI Digger,
went to doonbeg dug lug and found 3 peelers fished with lug for 2 hours didn’t want to use the crab until top of tide in darkness as I have found this beach fishes best on the drop,

I had 2 rods with 2 droppers size 2/0 clipped on each rod, 3 hooks baited with the lug and one with crab
Not long after I had cast out the crab I got talking to a chap that was FF further along the beach we chatted for 10 minutes or so and he wished me luck as he went on his way,

His wish came true he had no sooner gone out of sight when my rod tip started nodding and sure enough it was a Bass of around 34cm on the crab so I stuck the other 2 small crabs along with what was left of the first crab and some fresh lug on the second dropper after I cast it out I picked up the other rod to rebait it but had to put it down as the first rod started knocking again with another Bass of around the same size, on the dropper with the lug,

I ended up catching five and missing a few nice bites, I must have looked like a loon when one of the fish didn’t want to go back to sea he must have liked having his picture taken because every time I pointed him out to sea he made a bee line for the beach with me running after him trying to guide him homeward,

I have yet to try Poulnasherry, i got talking to a local while i fished the bridges of ross today and he said the same as you,

he asked if i had tried the fly there and said it was worth a go with the fly as he had seen a lot of people fish the spot,

does it get a bit Crowded there or have you room to move around, it sounds just the place for me as I had a rough measure of how far I can cast the fly today it worked out that the best I can manage is around 15 yards and that was in a windless corner protected by cliff’s, sad

Cheer’s

Hi Mann, nice to hear youve been amongst the fish. big grin Ive never seen anybody else fishing Poulnasherry but ive seen evidence that they have been there. I heard that Henry Gilbey was there recently so it could get more attention. It is always windy so take your bait rods when you go. 60 yards with a double sandeel should put you amongst the Rays winking I always fish from about 2 hours before low. Make sure you drive to the end of the track then walk for ten minutes to your left(through the field) follow the bushes to a small creek. Then fish your way back to the car. The mud can be sticky, take care whew! The rest is up to you. Good luck

Thank's Shannock,
I feel that if i had stayed on and fished the drop a little longer i would (maybe ) have caught bigger fish but what little lug i had left turn to balls of blood that just popped when i put them on the hook,
very thin skinned,

Digger,
I will be going back to kilkee before the weekend to pick up a couple of chartreuse bucktail that i asked mike burke to try get for me,
I tried all over to get it and had no joy,
I told mike my prob on sunday and he rang me today to say he got it for me, happy

nice bloke full of info, i must book a trip on his boat during the summer,

I drove past poulnasherry a couple of years back and as far as i can recall
I went over a bridge and looked down to see the tide out, if this is the area you speak of will I be fishing on the kilrush side or the Querrin side,
Another thing is bait, the lug I dig in Kerry will last a week but Doonbeg lug ( even after washing and rapping in paper on the spot, ) will only last a few hour’s before they blow,

Now that the warm weather is here I will be lucky if they last the six hours or so that I have to wait for the tide to come in, I like to fish the top then down a couple of hours,

Any idea’s on how to help them last a little longer, or maybe a place where I could dig tougher worms without having to travel to Kerry,

You might find this hard to believe ( my mate’s think I’m mad for doing it ) I fish the odd comp on the east coast from Arklow down to Waterford and so a day or two before it’s on I drive to Kerry from limerick just to dig lug that I know will last a few day’s,

So any help you might have on this would sure be welcomed,

Cheer’s. cool

Mann, ask Dr.Burke for directions to Poulnasherry, he is the local guru. As for the lug i dig most of mine on the Clare/ Galway border. If you only want a fistfull take a fork with you to Poulnasherry, they are mainly single dig, but not too deep.Making them last longer is close to Alchemy.I'm afraid you have to move the beer crying I save old take away boxes and line them with 6 or 7 layers of newspaper, cut to fit. Then put about 10mm of clean seawater in them. Put about 12 worms in each one, discard any damaged ones. I hide mine in the salad tray of the fridge (I once found my kids racing peeler crabs on the kitchen floor.) check the worms every couple of days and change the water. On the day of use put them into dry paper, this makes them tougher. Keep them in a baitbag with a cooler block and out of the sun and rain. Use all you take with you, they dont last that well out of water as you know. I have now passed all my wormwisdom on to you, keep the faith

Digger thanks for the info,
Never thought of adding a little water in with the paper, will try it next time out,
Went to Kilkee Wednesday evening and got my buck tails spent the night making minnows
I have a good mixed selection of colour’s now so next morning I went to the bridges of Ross to get a few mackerel,

Big change from last week when I got them almost every cast, this time it took 3 hours to catch 12 so I tried a bit of fishing on the bottom and had a lot of bites but only caught a three bearded rockling and a poor cod or it might have been a pouting,

Tried the fly’s and got a blank,

Fished Carrigaholt by the school and oyster bed’s got a good strong bite with the rod that had a whole squid on but I must have struck too soon and lost what could have been my first ray of the year,
A little later I had a Lsd that saved me blanking,

Went to the pier after that and watched a few lads belting out the feather traces and having no joy, so I decided to make life easy for myself by setting up a float rig with 2 droppers size 1 hooks with squid on and got 2 mackerel the lads from another planet passed the word around and soon I was bombarded from all angles with the strangest looking floats I have ever seen,

They learn fast these visitors,

Mann, I am working in Kilkee on and off at the moment. I sneaked off for a bit of spinning during last Thursday morning at the Pollack holes, first cast i had a nice little pollack of about 2lb the lads that were already there didnt look to impressed but that was topped by their expressions when i slipped the lucky little pollack back suprise Still plenty of Thornies left at Poulnasherry, I'm sure you could bag yourself a few. They seem to be getting a bit fussy on the feeding front and only would take fresh mackerel on Sunday, luckily i managed to swop some lug with another lad for some mackerel he had caught from the Blue Pool that morning. Most of the action took place 2 hours before low and the flood killed it off by 3 hours up. 6 rays were landed up to about 8lb big grin

Hallo sue look what you started happy cool

Digger you convinced me to get back to kilkee tomorrow so i will have a chat with mike about poulnasherry,
i have a few of the lads here going mad to go out on his boat but i told them if they get sea sick they will have to suffer because there's no turning back,
While fishing the school area I seen that the crab’s where having a go at the bait but they didn’t do much damage so I let them at it, the way I looked at it was the more they pulled bits off the more scent trail they where putting out for me, ( any excuse not to rebait my rigs every 5 minutes ) I think your idea of fishing before low water will work best at this mark so I will give it a go,

Hey Digger ask mike to tell you about the trout called Charlie that a friend of his was feeding
i nearly crashed thinking about it after he told me, big grin

Stroodsue, you have to shout really loud if you want the lads from the mountains to answer happy Mann, i,ve heard hushed whispers of good ray coming from North Clare so im staying close to home this weekend, but if your stuck for lug next week let me know. last weeks warm weather made them come closer inshore and they are giving themseves up. I dug about 200 in an hour. I'm going to start hunting wrasse soon, do you know where any big ones live?
