Does anyone know or suspect that local trawler action can increase the weed in the area? We had very little weed around Hayling until about 2 weeks ago when a couple of local trawlers began 'attacking' the bay. Since then the amount of weed drifting around has quadrupled and of course is a dam nuisance. My buddy reckons the trawlers have raked it up from the sea bed and it's now arriving on the beaches. Questions: 1. Do trawlers have this effect for sure? 2. I had been told that trawlers cannot now legally fish within a mile of the beach - is this true?

My Mate works on a trawler and you need a special licence to fish that close and only at certain times according to him.He also reckons its not worth the risk as the nets pull everything up and he could catch more than he bargained for. He tells me that a trawl will lift anything up off the seabed floor and they have had all sorts in their nets.
So I would guess that weed would be raked lose.
