I recently caught a sea trout and have since been told that it is illegal to keep any you catch and to eat them, is this true? |

It is illegal to retain any Sea Trout or Salmon unless you have the EA "Migratory Trout and Salmon licence. Even if you intend to return all fish, you still can't specifically target them without a licence either. |

I agree with MJB but, I rather suspect that this law is in place in order to 'protect' rich mens' sport. As both fish travel up rivers to spawn where they are taken by those rich enough to pay for the rights on those rivers which are very expensive (certainly beyond my means). Therefore, I am aware of the law but do not agree with the principle of it. If bass and plaice travelled up rivers to spawn, I suspect we would all be banned from catching them too. I much prefer the law which is operated in several American states where everyone can have a go but you can only take home a limited number of fish. If we did this in the UK I believe our conservation problems would vanish overnight. E.g. Last year I saw several so called sport boats arrive at the dock with literally dozens of bream on board and that is just pure greed in my opinion. |
