never fished for them before and im going down to south devon next week and have heard some good things so i wanted to know what are the best rigs and bait for them

My idea of fishing for thornback would be to keep things as less complicated as possible, I would use a fairly long snood and breaking strain of around 30lb and size 2/0 to 4/0 hooks., maybe as a clip down rig if you need to cast a fair distance ? A very common bait for Thornback is Sandeel.
This is your basic setup really and maybe someone closer to the venue maybe able to help on better baits that work better in that area and distances to cast ?

it's not just the thornback that has thorns on the spine..... I'm sore that many rays described as thornbacks are not: the rays I have seen in Dorset have been small-eyed, thornbacks are more common around the coast in the Bristol Channel. |
