Casting Worm baits?

Ello again, just another simply but stupid question to ask. I've never used worm baits but I'm planning on buying 20 or so ragworm tomorrow (and go fishing if the weather holds!). What I'm asking is how do you secure them on the hook? I'd guess that hooking once through the body would cause them to fly off as you cast. Should I use bait elastic for the top half of the worm and leave the rest dangle for movement?

find the nasty nippy end of the worm.
insert the hook point just below the jaws and feed the worm on to the hook.
either push the worm halfway up the trace then pull the point out so that part of the worm is left dangling or you can feed the worm all the way up the hook and onto the trace. bait elastic can be used but it can make things a bit messy

depends on alot of things- how powerful you cast, how soft your rod is and how good your worms are- if you dont cast too hard or if your rod is soft then you'll generally not lose too much of the rag. A lot of people say dip your rag in the water before you cast- I've tried it and it kind of works.

generally if you're casting in daylight you'll be able to see if you lose all the worms from the hook- if that happens, retrieve and bait up/cast again- bit more hit and miss in the dark - just try and thread as much as the worm through the hook and onto the snood as you can.

One alternative i can recommend is using a D-Vice- no worries about losing buts of your rag at all as they're protected inside the tube/capsule.

I've never bothered to use elastic on rag to be honest.

Agree with Dude, best thing is a to use a clipped down rig as it is highly unlikely that you will lose the worms no matter how hard you cast the rig. I use the nylon mini-booms on my clipped down rigs to hold the snoods away from the rig body and help reduce tangling.

I see what you mean by the snoods Eccles, luckily I have a 2 hook flapper which has lasted me a good 15+ hours fishing (I usually manage to lose about 2 rigs every 4 hours sad

).

Will have to go fishing later today even if it is nearly 0c hehe, winds going to be too powerful in the next few days around here.

If you have difficulty threading them onto the hook, use a baiting needle - they are only about a quid from the tackle shop.

Ask the guy in the tackle shop how to use them - it's easier to watch him than me explain.

As for using it, I get the idea of how to after watching a video of Alan Yates (yep Bread, I know you're a big fan) showing how to hook lug and rag. Seems simple enough but I'll still end up poking my eye out.

Hi nem
go to your local tackle shop and ask for a baiting needle they only cost a few quid, you thread the worm on the needle then put the hook in the other end of the needle and thread the worm on the hook, there simple to use, just ask the tackle guy for a demo.
