Hi
just thought I would share this.
Saw a listing on ebay for a BNIB Penn 525 Supermag Xtra. It was listed in such a way that it was not in the mainstream listing you would expect, so the bidding on it was low.
I eventually won the item for £101 plus postage-a great price. The seller was listed as being in Eire and I duly awaited delivery.
When the reel arrived I was obviously disappointed to find it was a basic 52 Mag. (the parcel was also posted from Australia!!) so I lodged a complaint with Paypal.
The seller contacted me and explained that he must have picked the wrong box off his shelf (he is a dealer in Ireland-clearly with long arms as his "shelf" must have been in Sydney lol) and that he would send the SuperMag Xtra as soon as he recieved the Mag.
I sent the Mag off and credit to the guy, within 4 days the Supermag arrived and very pleased I am with it.
The point is, I have seen several other listings for Supermags, which upon closer inspection turn out to be the much lower spec Mag reel.
Therefore the moral of the story is Check your tackle if buying on an internet auction site AND use Paypal, that way you can block payment if you get a duff lot. |

E Bay is good to buy from for tackle but like most things a bit of research is essential. Basic tackle i have never gone wrong, i recently purchased 50 red zip slides for £6 with free delivery - cannot fault that. I always read the feedback scores and comments and usually stay away from those who are low.
For the more exspensive items like rods and reels i wonder how many people actually ask questions because this is the sellers main get out clause - sold as seen / described and they put the emphasis on the bidder to delve deeper in to the quality / accuracy of the product.
The amount of tackle on e bay for sale is shocking at not all of it is a bargain, for me a bargain on e bay has to be a good saving then me going to the tackle shop. A good example is the shimano baitrunner, on e bay the used ones still go for around £50 - £60. Given the fact that Veals are doing them for £60 - £70 the savings for me is too small so for the extra tenner or so i will buy new from a reputable dealer.
Good you got a end result i bet a lot of people out there do not.
cheers and enjoy the reel.

Hi Lee
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I am always pretty careful and did look at this sellers feedback, which was excellent. He maintained it was a genuine mistake, but there are people out there who will misrepresent items to make a bigger profit.
You are also right, good research during an auction to find out the RRP is a must and given that most auctions are at least 5 days in duration it is only laziness if you dont do it. Trouble is if your fingers get burned then you have two choices-put up with it or re-sell it oncorrectly in an attempt to get your money back.
I had another run in with a dealer who sells loads of gear on ebay. Bought an Xcursion rod from him, well I paid for it and he didnt deliver, he also wouldnt answer any messages or calls, so again I lodged a complaint with Paypal and eventually got my money back, but it leaves a sour taste when people back out, presumably because the auction doesnt reach the price they wanted.
Anyway enough about my moaning gotta get some work done. Tight lines

I have used eBay numerous times to purchase small items. I have bought rig wallets, line, rig making equipment and a few other bits and pieces.
I always check the seller’s feedback and make sure I don’t just check the latest listings. I will go back a few months and make sure everyone is happy with their purchases. Buying something expensive like a reel I would be very cautious because there are many people out there who will sell you anything.
I think you always have to be very aware of what is going on but I do think there are bargains to be had bit for more expensive items, I would like to have it in my hands before making any payment.
As with everything there will always be crooks looking for a fast buck and you always have to be very careful.
Cheers

This topic was recently covered on another post. Can't find it otherwise I would of put in a link.
I would advise all people to check sellers feedback. I usually go back to the first bit of negative feedback or neutral feedback.
If you are buying small items or cheap items you can't go wrong.
Always read the entire listing as you may find that you are buying a box or a link to a website that sells the item cheaply.
I have bought hundreds of items on ebay, only once had an item not turn up. Told the seller he sent another item the same day which arrived the following day.
always pay with paypal as your purchase is protected and you can get your money back if there is a problem

I honestly don't see the difference between tackle shops and ebay. You have to be careful with both but I have had some good deels with both and can think of at least two tackle shops in my area (no names mentioned) where you can easily get done because they sell some rubbish which comes apart all too easily. I can still remember buying a telescopic rod from a tackle shop about 12 years ago (in my then ignorance) and being told that it was "a good strong rod". First time I really tried to put some welly into casting it, it split in two. Of course, I learned my lesson and never went to that shop again. I also know of a tackle shop where the proprietor is a rude git and charges well over the odds. So as the man said be careful, think what you are doing and don't buy if you are not sure on ebay and in tackle shops. |

I get my bait off ebay every week and never have any probs. Not only that is you can see from thir feedback what their reputation is like, you don't get that in a tackle shop!! I won't be going anywhere else as it's so convenient. It gets delivered straight to my wks address. |
