Please post your Tactics / Tips on how to catch Pollack in your local area here. Please remember in this part of the forum to click the reply button to post and Not the "New Post" button Also one main point to remember is that these new forums are intended to help totally new sea anglers to the sport so please post in great detail type of rods/reels used, explain about traces/rigs used, depth to fish and so on or anything else I have missed that you feel will help the novice sea angler.

Beach and pier spots in the Solent area are few as they do prefer deepish water (even the small ones). That said, I have had a few small ones using sinking lures at South Parade Pier and Langstone Harbour entrance. Tactic was to tie a 4 to 6 inch Shad or Rubber Eel to an 18 inch snood with a drilled bullet behind it to give one some casting power. Use a light casting rod no longer than 10 ft to cast out around 50yds followed by a sink and draw wind in. Most of the large Pollack are taken around reef and wreck sites using live sand eels or said rubber eels (bright red seems to be good colour for the artificials). There is no mistaking a pollack bite - it's almost always one tremendous yank followed by a bit of a run but they don't keep fighting like bass do.

Hi, I have just returned to sea fishing after a 20 year break and I seem to be catching predominately pollack.
I live in the West Coast of Scotland (Inverclyde) and I have been fishing at the Custom House Quay in Greenock. My son and I have been fishing most weekends and as mentioned pollack is what we are catching. My son uses a Ron Thomson 9ft spinning rod and I am using a 12ft beach-caster. Casting out from the quay is not producing fish for most folk here right now but in close to the side is proving fruitful.
Due to the nature of the ground we are both using rotten bottom rigs (http://www.nesa.co.uk/Rig-Section/Rotten_bottom_rig.html) loaded with rag worm. we have used mackerel which also caught pollack but I would not say it was as productive, maybe me doing something wrong and it is not the bait. We are literally dropping the line over the edge and within minutes we are getting bites. We have not yet lost ant tackle from the rotten bottom rigs as yet but I think it is better to be prepared. There have been a few pollack around the 1lb or so size which have been returned but there have been larger ones caught.
Today I caught 4 small ones, all returned within 30 minutes. I set up my sons rod and while I tried to set up my own I was getting bite after bite and each time it was a small pollack. Just make sure the hook is showing through the worm. We are fishing about 1ft off the bottom, hence the rotten bottom rigs.
