Hi There!
I am only young but I love fishing, Im 15and hope to get out over the winter to catch for what I hope to be codling, but very much dout it.

I was hoping you more experienced anglers could help me out here. Ive been reading other posts and noticed squid has been popular. What other baits would you reccomend me to try out?
What rigs also? I have a pennel rigs that I picked up from somewhere and couple of patternoster rigs. I am hoping to spend some time down on seaford beach or Newhaven East Pier as it will be easily accessable from where I am moving too.
Any other tips will be great!
Thanks

Hiya and welcome

Other baits worth having and are easy to obtain

Rag
Lug
Mackeral

Come Spring/Summer - Peeler Crab

As for rigs, another good one to keep handy is a Pulley Rig.

Could be worth you investing in a book called "The Sea Anglers Guide to Bait and Rigs" - it is a very good reference book, with step by step guides on making your own rigs, and contains virtually any rig you may need as a RSA, as well as a whole section on baits and how to present them

Hope that helps

im a strong believer in "if a fish is hungry it will eat anything" so if they sell it in a sea tackle shop then its possible to catch fish...... but like the previous post the ones which stand out and have success are lug and rag worm, just be sure to put on a couple at a time and thread them up the line, and general tip it with squid or mackeral, it just adds that extra bit of scent. which ever rig you choose i suggest using 3 to 6 o hooks, they have large mouths and anything much smaller is easy to dislodge.
when your fishing, keep an eye on your hooks to to see if they have become blunt, this is because they rub up against the sea bed, keep a file or something in your tackle box.....
last tip......
let the bite develope, if you strike the second theres a tap on your rod theres a good chance you wont connect (unless your rods been pulled in happy ), cod have a habbit of causing slack line bites...youll see your rod bend over then whip back straight and when you wind there will be no weight...this is because the fish is swimming towards you....so wind untill you feel weight then strike.... hope this helps

hermit crap may be difficult to get hold of as these people choose to live alone and have little or no social contact... happy not too sure of the scent either... big grin

its worth experimenting with baits.
if you are fishing a sheltered area carp pellets can bring in bait fish which in turn bring in the bigger fish.
when pier fishing it can pay to use a float as the fish are usually swimmiing around the structure not just on the bottom

When I use hermit crab I thread the lower hook of a pennel down through the tail and into the body, hook the top hook into the tail then secure with bait elastic

its pretty simple just run the hook from the tail end (the end that has no claws big grin ) down through as much of the body as you can and come out somewhere near the head, but wrap elastic from the top to bottem, if your fishing at night im sure the fish arent going to see it tougue
