I was out fishing with a family group a couple of months ago. and we were loaded up for anything that came along. The amount of bait we had between us was rediculas. Some of the gang that wre told not to bring bait did so and of course with there being 8 of us we had far too much. We had a cracking session with no less than seven species being caught. It was late when we got home and all I wanted was bed. A couple of days later I decided to strip my reels and give um a good servicing, Imagine my horror when I open my box, The pong was unbearable, (some crafty sod had put all the unused bait in MY box) Sod it I thought I'll freez it. I took it with my on the next boat trip on Blue Mink out of fleetwood. Everyone stood upwind of me (can't blame em) I out fished the lot of em I kid you not, all the others wre using fresh lug and mackrel. Anyone had a similar experiance?

I know some people that regularly go throught the bins at Walton Pier. They say when mackerel especially is really starting to pong it is excellent for bait in drop nets for hermit crabs. Can't say that for rag, but lug is OK when a few days old providing it isn't dead.

big grin i allways buy a load of cheap tined fish from lidl, mash it up along with old mackerel and fish guts with a good helping of cod liver oil, enough to fill about four large coffee jars. put them away for about three or four weeks then use them as ground bait, i cut a hole in the lid and drop them in off the rocks or peir, but i came across a few jars that i had forgot about from last year, so yersterday i took them to culdaff peir, there were a lot of people there fishing so i had to work my way in to the corner. so i cut the lid on one of the jars........... i nearly threw up, everyone on the peir cleared, the smell was unbearable. i kicked it in and i had one of the best days fishing in a long time.

I use plaice frames in lobster pots - some of 'em smelled so bad I had to drive home with my hands out of the car window (not both at he same time obviously) and then had to try and convince the great one that I hadn't been mucking about with the friendly girls under the pier! Fullest lobster pots I've ever had, so guess the smellier the better.
