Fished Portishead Pier today for a few hours as this cracking settled weather continues - how much longer can it last.
The tide was very small at only 9.6 so there was not too much movement. The weather was fine clear and sunny with only about a force 2.
It was the first time i fished here as i usually fish battery point. The pier gets submerged above any tide of 12.4 and above, and i would of thought any tide around 12.0 would see it get swamped by the very close passing boats coming out of the marina. Some of these boats pass within 6ft.
Fished with rag/squid cocktail with a few rattles throughout the day. A codling around 2lb and a handful of small whiting were the order of the day.
Will look forward to fishing here many times throughout the winter. It clearly can get quite busy. By 3pm there were about 15 people fishing.
i've given the pier a miss for the last few weeks.
The crabs round there are a real pain in the ass.
The boats are a pain in the ass too. Some take a wide berth coming out as they know people will most likely be fishing, and others cling the wall on the out just to piss you off. i have nearly lost a rod of two cos of them.
Here's an idea for the cod from the pier though. This works..on the right day anyway.
All round the bottom edges of the pier there are some large boulders.
All round there are some really nice shrimp and prawn.
i have dropped small crab nets over the ledge with the carcases of my cut mackerel.
lift out after a while and check out the size of some of the shrimp you get.
Very large with very bright pink eyes.
Feed a couple of these onto your hook and throw out no more than 10 - 15 yards.
The cod come into the bottom of the pier and pick up the shrimp. i have seen some good ones off there now this way, and when opened up, they were full of shrimp.
It's worth a go...
Everyone talks of squid, peeler, rag etc for the cod, but no-one mentions the shrimp.
I have caught my own codling and when gutted, there were plenty shrimp inside them..they must like them huh..
