The Daiwa Longbeam is in excellent shape. Nice feeling rod with excellent bite detection - Holds the surf well too.

It can be found online for £39

Depends on how much you want to spend. I have both cheapies (carbon composites) and full carbon. The latter can cost you well over £100 but doesn't make much difference to the catch. There is also the ongoing debate about casting. If you learn a decent casting style a 12 or 13 ft job will still get you out there but many prefer the very long rods which get you out there with an overhead thump cast but IMO are heavy and awkward to use. I suppose my best rod is a 12ft Shakespeare Salt Beach because it is light and easy to use and is not that dear - can be got for around £50 if you hunt around. On the other hand I also have a Cormoran Cheapie 13 ft which is regularly used and cost me just £17.50 on ebay. Not as nice as the Shakespeare though.
