@eccles

I am English, met an American girl and stayed here. The fishing can be great round here, but I work in a marina, and when the fish are breaking and the birds working in the harbour, its tough to watch while your working. love struck

Blue fish are great fun to catch, give a good fight, fun to catch. The biggest one I have caught is 9lbs.

Stripers, AKA Striped Bass are the fish of choice around here, great fun to catch and good eating. Largest striper I have caught is 35in and 18lb, still waiting for that 50lb trophy :wink:

Heres a link to fishing limits in nyc and whats around here to catch.

If your ever in the NYC area, let me know!

Great story with the hazel rod, got any photo's?

I think this is a great debate and useful for the novice to choose kit but one thing I must add is that if you are just starting out ,buying a poker that your casting style just wont bend will prob get you less distance than a cheap shakespeare, even more so if your off a pier with an overhead thump. My feelings are go for a mid range rod initially, perhaps one that used to be the bees knees, but you must be able to bend it. My candidate for this is a paul Kerry(diawa) Moonraker. great bite detection, not too stiff and you can get one for about £50-60 on ebay and the like.

Well OK Dane, but I have to tell you that my chinese carbon £15 3 piece has two tips, one 'bends' and is rated for up to 150 gms, the other is stiffer and rated up to 200 gms. We have some wicked tide races in some places around Hayling so you sometimes need to chuck a big weight out with spikes; the floppy tip I use with a 2/3 oz weight where the tide is not a problem and I want to get up to 150 yds out, e.g. fishing for plaice over the sand banks at high water. So for beginners out there who can't afford a small fortune, go for this rod, you won't be disappointed. BTW jce I have heard of American striped bass, I believe they are related to European bass which are equally good sport and eating, they dont get much bigger than 20lbs though and anyone who gets a double figure fish has had a really good day.

8O Well, I really did stir up some debate. Now then, lets take this on a stage.

I have shortlisted 2 three piece rods.

1) ZZIPLEX GB3 LITE 4.6M
2) CENTURY CARBON METAL SRE 4.6M

What's interesting is that the Century retails at around £289 and the Zziplex £329. However, the Century is being discounted by most retailers (One dealer quoted £219) but not the Zziplex. Not sure why this is as I assume they are both desirable rods.

Appreciate all comments on my choice and which should I choose?.

Thanks in advance

i'm a century man and prob always will be so thats my choice.

there's a brief review in the january issue of total sea fishing on the century carbon metal BB. it says that danny moeskops has cast over 250 yards with a 175gr lead, so it casts well. but it can damage very soft baits during the cast. but is very light wieght and " a fantastic rod to use".

it does say that it's a 2 equal section rod though (15ft)!

hope this is of some use.
