hello everyone,
I'm looking for advice on the best/cheapest way to get started fishing in southsea. I live a stones throw from the beach and i've seen the amount of fishing to be had..
I'm after something cheap and simple .. any ideas? |

if your after cheap but good tackle then pop in to justins(lock stock and tackkle)he normaly has some second hand rods with a good prise tag on them.(he is in elm grove south sea)or why not pop along to a car boot sale many a bargin can be had.suppose how cheap you want mate, what kind of prise range you willing to spend. As im sure if you can put that down then some of the lads on here might be able to help you out better, you never know someone on here might have a rod n reel that you could buy of them for some pennies
hope this might help you out

Forget Argos for a start, the good stuff such as it is, is overpriced and the cheap stuff I would not trust for sea fishing which requires reasonably robust gear. I like Lock, Stock and Tackle too they will also chat away about current prospects, where to go. Stay away from a certain place in Eastney - he is a miserable s*** and can be pricey. Also have a hunt round the 'net - occasionally there is some good stuff on ebay, also Mullarkeys, Reelsndeals and Tackle Bargains are worth a look. Do not get the really cheap stuff as it does not last 5 minutes in the average beach situation. |

Fladen Rods OK for a starter but reels for £12 has got to be questionable unless they are from a well known maker. |

I also agree with checking out local boot sales or second-hand markets etc if you have any down that way. To give you an example i picked up a NEW telescopic beach-caster with reel from my local 'second-hand' market and the set was just a tenner. ok, its a telescopic which are not the best as weknow but iy was for my nephew and he is more than happy. The reel itself is worth a tenner on ts own. I have only been sea fishing for about 3 yrs and have built up an average outfit so far. Plus listen to your local advice on here, as good helpful tackle dealers are a god-send. Hope this helps.
Cheers. |

Forgive me if you don't agree but cheap telescopic rods almost always bust when you try to put some power into a cast, they just are not worth bothering with. |

Eccles: Indeed i do agree, which as i said if you noted were not the best, but point being that you can find good bargains if you shop around. Also, the reel itself was a bargain at a tenner all-in with the deal, ideal if looking for a cheap way to get started as was the initial post. No offence to your opinion by the way, cheers mate. |

Sounds like you bought a cheapie but at too high a price mate. The good stuff from Shakespeare starts at around £60 for rod alone (Salt Range) if you pay less than that, you just get the cheap stuff which is OK for messing around but not for serious fishing. Unfortunately, some tackle shops mark this stuff up heavily and folk think they are getting something great which they are not. |

Well sorry to hear that mate, contender is just about bottom of Shakespeare's range and worth about £20 in my book except I would not buy one. I am not saying there is anything wrong with them, it's just that they are heavy, awkward and do not have a great casting action. Having said all that, they are fine for occasional use if you just want to chuck out some bait a few yards and hope something will turn up as an awful lot of gents do, and who is to say that they don't enjoy a day at the beach? When you want something a bit better, have a chat with a few blokes on this webby and see what they say. I will finish by saying that I am not a tackle tart meself and would never pay £150 or more like some because you don't need to pay that much for a half decent rod and the fish don't care anyway. |
