Hi all I am British but I live on the Island of Menorca, Spain. I hear you all shouting "Lucky Sod" But fishing here is not easy. Menorca is a small Island, and eventhough we are surounded by sea, fishing from the shore is hard work. I have been fishing for years, but only recently I have started reading more and trying new things, with some sucess. I am wondering if anyone knows more about fishing the Med from the shore, and best baits. I have caught the odd nice sea bream, and some cracking mullet. I would love to try to catch some Bass. Does anyone know when they would be around in the med. Any tips would be great

The wife has got a holiday home 100yds from the beach near Alicante. Spent a month last year fishing virtually every night, and caught absolutely bugger all. Can honestly say I didn't get a bite. All I can say is that the Spanish must eat everything that swins including small children. Sorry I can't be of any more help, but it still brings back bad memories. |

Hi I lived in Spain for 7 years near Benidorm tried fishing from shore and boat I never caught a thing. I was once at Calpe fish quay and the size of fish they were landing i'm sure was illegal. |

Yes I know the feeling guys. I too caught very little for years. I have lived here for 17 years from boy hood. I have watched Spaniards catching tidllers and keeping them all my life(I always put them back) and also watched fishing boats netting so close in that it just seamed riduculas. Now a days it seams a little better, and a few laws seam t be in place. But I still see the locals keeping tiny (2inch long) sea bream adn cooking them all for a soup type dish!!!!! It really anoys me. As per usual Europe just does what it wants when it comes to laws and in Britain we try and do things correctly. But saying that I have started to have some succes just recently. I hope this is a sign that things and times are changing!!!! OR maybe I have been lucky.
BASS tips pls, Even if its from British shores !!! I can only try !!!!!
Cheers

I can't comment on Spain but I fish along the Algarve coast of Portugal (going next week and can't wait). Different sea (Atlantic) but the same local philosophy of keeping tiddlers and fishing boats coming close to shore. As a result there's very little there although the west coast at the end of The Algarve is better.
However, on the subject of taking small fish, I often have trouble reconciling my belief that we should throw them back with my desire to eat whitebait and sardines which are freely available in Portugal and the UK (indeed all around the world). |
