I had to pack up sea fishing and casting some 20 years ago at which time I used a backcasting style.I now visit South Africa frequently and have caught the sea angling bug again.I have purchased new rods and reels and Iam trying to learn the pendulum cast, however, the baits are big and the weights required are heavy where I fish in SA .I would like to take a rod which is suitable for backcasting but I just can't seem to find any information about what is suitable. Can anyone help with suggestions for a rod and where to get it.
Thanks |

Hi Genosmate,
Dave Vicary a well known Backcaster on the Tournament circuit has, along with the help of Terry Carroll (Zziplex) developed a 3 piece 15' long rod that will cope with backcasting.
Dave originally designed them for fishing for BIG fish from the waters around the Eastern US shores. (Red Drum 60lb +, Rays to 450lb + and Sharks) The conditions can be so bad that 12oz of lead is required and half a 12" mullet.
These rods were reviewed in sea Angler a short while ago.
Hope this helps - Led |

The Ron Thompson Axellarator 13'6" stiff as a poker and is capable of casting massive weights, apparently held in high regard by anglers fishing for Bronzies. I own one and it is capable of handling anything shore caught in this country. Don't be put off by it's cheap price tag, you can get one for just over £100( cheaper if you shop around). Its made of top quality components and comes supplied with a sliding reel seat.
I've seen these being used on the casting circuit with favourable results.
Hope this has been of some help. |
