Just try a three hook rig. You'll get one in your local tackle shop. Start with that ato get you going and as you get to know whats what, start experimenting with other rigs and see what works at different times.
Pier-fishing can be very productive. If you follow the following general rules for pier-fishing you will catch fish.
1. Dont be tempted to cast away from the pier. The majority of fish are right at your feet, swimming around the piles (pier legs) looking for food.
2. Always fish the uptide side of the pier so you are fishing into the flood-tide, change over to the other side once the tide has changed direction and begins to ebb. This way your baited hooks will be where the fish are.
3. Don't be tempted to fish right at the end of the pier. Most fish are usually to be found around the middle section, particularly if the pier dries out when the tide is out.
4. Most fish hunt around the bottom of the piles, so your bait needs to be on or near the bottom. A ledger rig is usually a good approach, so too the 'one-up one-down' rig where one hook is on the bottom and the other a little way off the bottom. Size 1 hooks are a good standard. Go bigger if you expect bigger fish like cod etc.
5. Try and vary where you fish, if you do not have any success at one part move to another part, don't stay in one place if you are not getting any bites.
6. Offer the fish baits that they would expect to find when hunting around the piles. Mussels, crabs, prawns and fish-strips are excellent pier-fishing baits. Lugworm and ragworm will also catch fish, but food that lives on or by the piles is best.
