Is this a trick question?
And did you actually catch mackerel with the spinner?
If you did, does that not mean that you can catch mackerel?
Most people use mackerel feathers which means you can catch from 6-10 at a time

1. There are no mackerel around yet and not likely to be for at least another month because the sea temperature is still low.
2. Get a push bike and a light rod then cycle slowly up and down yer seafront until you see some bird activity. The birds spot the fish long before we do and start getting excited (feeding frenzy). Then start casting yer lure where the birds are going bonkers. You will get one.

Hi there are plenty of Mackerel around offshore but they dont appear to be venturing inshore yet (still to cold). When they are around (look for the birds etc as Eccles pointed out) forget feathers and try using a small Hokki rig, they outfish feathers every time. Using a lure is good fun but if you wanna fill up yer fridgefreezer give the Hokkis a go, theyre the nuts.Rob.

Absolutely too early, although depending which part of the UK you are in. In Plymouth i start to fish for them from mid may to mid october. Float fished mackerel or gar strip is lethal - do not bother with squid strip.

Berry Head in Devon is an amazing spinning haunt for gar and mackerel. A decent spinning rod with 3 - 4 feathers and in a 4 hour session anything up to 20 mackerel / gar is poss.

I really would not bother with a single lure.

cheers

For really good results, instead of using a plain lead with a set of feathers/ hokkai lures use a heavy spinner, such as a 45 or 60gm Dexter Wedge. This will allow the chance of a good bass too, as they will be hunting the shoals of mackerel.

Tight Lines.
