Hi all, I am a new member and fairly new to Sea Fishing. I have recently started Sea fishing and am really enjoying it. I have manged to fish the last two weekends at Lowestoft Harbour and Down on the south coast a LittleStone. Good fishing at Littlestone (Flounders and nice Sea bass) but I was really disappointed at Lowestoft (One tiny codling and a crab).
I was just wondering what you recommend for improving my chances fishing from either Lowestoft Harbour/ Pier and along the beach up towards Kessingland where I stay most weekends.
I am looking for advice on the type of bait to use, what rigs work well and what type of fish you expect to be caught along there.
Thanks

At the moment they seem to be catching a few bits and bobs like undersize codling/whiting from the beaches up that way. A few sizeable bass have been caught to my knowledge. As time goes on, soles will start to put in an appearance also. Baits would mainly be peeler crab, lugworm, ragworm. If you use two rods then it normally pays to swap around with methods. I use a running leger on one rod and a two hook flapper type rig on the other. It's all down to preference really or whatever you feel confident using. If fishing at night then try very close in for soles and bass. Start at say twenty yards and cast a bit further out if no luck. Daytime I have done better there by blasting the baits out especially if it is not roughed up or the water coloured. Good luck. |

Thanks for your post slashley, a great help. We went fishing on saturday afternoon on the beach at Kessingland and Caught ourselves a nice sized sea bass. Used Lug only, but will try some peeler crab or rag next time. It went a bit quite after the initial excitement, but I think, after reading your post, I may have been trying a bit to far out. I was casting out about 50 to 70 meters, beyond the breakers, so I may have been to far out for the bass. I now have a second rod, just bought one at car boot and will try a variation of traces when I next go down, probably two weeks from now. Will let you kno whow I get on.
Cheers

Glad you got a fish. Sounds like it was good fun. I am no expert on the area cos only probably fished that area several times but the info was fairly general stuff. I think there are various sand bars there and by fishing the distance you did was exactly what I would have done. I would just chuck the other rod really close in or far out. Just swapping around and trying to see where they might be. Well good luck for next time and if I see or hear of any reports for those beaches, I will keep ya posted. |

Had a great day fishing on the beach at Kessingland today, We (Me and my boys) caught five sea bass, one undersize so it went back. The other four were good sizes and we had them on the barbecue later this afternoon. Lots of bites and great fun over a two hour period.
My youngest bought himself a great rod and reel from Sam Hook in Lowestoft on saturday. A great deal at only £40 all in. A 12 foot beachcaster, reel, line and shock leader line. Also bought a rod stand that was well made and great value at £22. I must say, Sam Hook always has great advice and I find it very reasonable. We always get out bait from there now and we were also give scraps for free.
Was just wondering if anyone knows where we can dig our own Lug nearby. We stay most weekend at Kessingland. The beach there is completely baron of any worm casts so was wondering if there is somewhere nearby. Any ideas folks?
cheers

We were down on the beach about 9am, this was a good three hours before high tide. The sea was very calm and clear, made for a great days fishing I can tell ya. Got a bit sunburnt though.
Think I will start a new thread about where to dig for Lug in the Lowestoft area.
