rod repair

Hi all,

I have recently bought a rod from flea bay and upon inspection it looks like there may be a 2 inch crack on the inside of the spiggot housing. If it is a crack and the seller will not take it back will it be repairable or will i require a new but section. Never had any issues with e bay stuff before and this one has p---ed me off a bit cos i paid a lot of money for it and it was listed as VG condition.

Where exactly is the crack? Is it on the male section of the spigot that inserts into the other section of rod? ( a picture paints a thousand words)

Hi TC,

Its on the female part and is on the inside. I have had the rod together and there is no give in the spiggot and is still tight. If i took a picture you would not be able to see it. Like i said it is about 2 inches long and although it is from the rim of the female part it does not seem to have gone all of the way through to the outside but this is what i can see from the rim as the outside ot the joint has got high build on it. The rod is an M4 Evo and it is pretty solid in the area of the spiggot.

contact the seller and if you get no joy then contact ebay and paypal if you used them.
if you try to fix it in any way then you are screwed if it doesnt work out as the seller could say you damaged it beyond repair.
even if it seems fine id still get it sent back, what might be a small crack now, could be a split thru the rod in a few weeks or months.

As redmouse says, try first to gain your money back or rplacement goods. If you get no joy, the position of the crack means all is not lost. Overwhipping of the joint with quality thread and doping and varnishing will probably last the lifetime of the rod. For peace of mind a new rod or money back is better.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am down in Hythe next week fishing and will get a rod builder to have a look at it just to clarify that it is a crack and not just a bad scratch from the male being put in. What ever it is though i will either attempt to get all my money back or at least some if it is not a crack as the rod was not the condition as stated in the listing anyway.

Looking at this from another point of view, If you had bought the rod off me, left it a week or two and then complained that it was damaged when you received it, I would tend to tell you to "go away".
You should get in touch with the seller immediately through Ebay and tell him/her the problem and ask if they will come to some compromise.

If you are stuck with the rod, a local to you engineering company should be able to turn up a small brass ring being a tight fit on the outside of the female part, held in place with a good epoxy glue. My old rod had one from new but it was damaged in a car door. I got a new one made and fitted it myself. works fine, and it tightened up the ferrel nicely.

Thanks once again guys,

I have contacted the seller on the day i opened the parcel and told them of the problem and what my intentions are which is to take the rod to a dealer and get their point of view. Havnt heard nothing back from them though.
