Hello All,
Once again, Me, Bigsi and new friend Northernsteve fished canvey Islands southfalls road venue. It was comfortable but chilly night, with a brisk westerly breeze and good cloud cover. The tide was 5.2mtrs at 23.26pm, the tide seemed to make a little slower than anticipated, presumably due to the westerly, However this certainly did not affect the fishing. Bigsi and Northernsteve both fished hard with the lugworm and squid cocktails, and within the first hour of fishing had lost count of the number of small codling that they had caught. I chose to fish with slightly larger hooks, and concentrated on using shellfish and squid exclusively, hoping that this would be a little more selective, and allow me to keep a bait in the water for a little longer without the attention of the smaller fish. This decision seemed to work to a point, the bites certainly came a little slower, but the stamp of fish did not improve to any noticeable degree.
Shortly before high water, as the bites from the codling expectedly slowed, Bigsi’s rod rattled with another bite, cooly expecting another small codling Bigsi reeled in to find a sizeable dab, which was so hungry it had tried to eat the entire hook and snood, needless to say that was its last meal. (Now my lunch)
The tide turned with vengeance, this time accelerated by the wind, which commanded the employment of some uptide casting to maintain a good hold on the lead. The cloud cover also broke into a crisp clear sky and exposed a powerfully bright moon, which I feel did the fishing no good at all. The codling kept coming well into the ebb, although at a reduced rate, it was becoming apparent that there was going to be a no show once again for the better fish, My confidence had gone with the arrival of the moonlight.
Baiting up for a last cast, I heard an almighty crack followed by a splash accented by a few choice words, I looked round to see Northernsteve brandishing half of his rod, which some how had exploded during his cast, fortunately the line had remained intact and the tip was retrieved, on closer inspection it was discovered that the spigot had shattered for no apparent reason, the rod was being used well within its casting weight and not really being pressed that hard, as long distance casting is not necessary at this venue. Testimony of Northernsteves good nature, he kept his cool and said “Well they’ll be getting to hear from me then” followed by a shrug of the shoulders and a knowing grin.
Bigsi and I had our last chucks of the night and both brought in a further three codling between us, now with tiredness creeping in we called it a night.
In summary a good nights action, with countless codling, a couple of schoolies and an unlucky dab(greed is not always good) Plus ofcourse three happy punters.
Cheers all,
OCB.
PS. Nice to meet you steve, Fish with you any time, Keep intouch. OCB.. |
