Hey,

I am having a bit of a clear out of unused gear etc. And have a budget of about £80-£100 for a FS Rod and reel. However that is a guide you don't have to stick to it.

I am really after a rod that is ideal for Clean ground fishing and preferably 13/14ft. The rod I have at the moment is okay but a bit short and the tip is far to rigid for my liking, so something with a sensitive tip would be ideal.

I just really want ideas on Rod and reels and will go from there, as I say although I have a budget don't stick to it as I will stretch for a good deal.

Many thanks,

Greg

I have just bought a 15ft Shakespear salt XT surf rod fixed spool £75, and a 4inch Flatty rattled the tip, I thought it was a much bigger fish, ok, Leonard

I also approve of the Daiwa reels and have used them for the last three years no problem. Haven't tried them myself but met a guy the other day who was quite happy with his Rovex rods so they could be worth a look at the cheaper end of the market. I also have a Salt 12 ft which I used for some time before going up market with my current Hellbenders. Unfortunately Shakespeare made some of their Salt long surf rods with chrome ferrules which quickly rusted so don't bother with those, although they may now have changed that defect.

For 80 quid mate it's a bargain. Absolutely nothing wrong with the shakespeare rods these days and as Eccles says the Daiwa reels are sound

Sounds a good deal but there is one thing you need to change. The rod is rung for multiplier reels and is not suitable to use with the daiwa opus.

Get the the salt fx model instead of the mx.

....and Daiwa FS sea reels generally have wider spools than many others which is a distinct aid to distance casting in my experience. I know some will disagree but for me a decent modern fixed spool reel will cast as far as I ever need to (up to 150 yds) avoid birds nests (especially after dark) and wind that fish in more quickly than a multi. That said, I do have a multi but it gets used for boat work where one is likely to get more large fish so the extra cranking power pays off.
