I fancied a day out this week without having to think where to fish, so I booked a day out with Justin Anwyl. As expected I did not have to do to much thinking as he takes you out and tries to put you on fish, and he did. We did not catch loads and loads but the ones we did catch were good quality topped by a 5 - 6lber caught by Justin, my largest was just around the 2lb mark. A good day afloat.
Then after I had left Justin, I went to a popular mark and as I arrived I could see terns working just of the beach constantly diving in picking up food. So i quickly donned my waders and headed out. I found a large shoal of mackeral blitzing very close to the beach, infact as I waded they were between my legs at one point. They were quite fussy about what they took and after nailing a couple on a clouser, it was apparent I needed to "match the hatch" and so put on a small DNA baitfish pattern. I cast this out and tweaked it occasionally and that did the trick, one after another I had a hard fighting mackeral on. If I stripped it, they did not take. I also had a few bass using the same method, leating it dead drift with the occasional teak.
All in all I had about 20 mackeral and I think about 5 bass.

How much does he charge these days?

How long were you fishing with him i.e. start - finish?

He charges £145 per person and you fish 1 tide, i.e. 6 - 7 hours. We started at 9.30 and finsihed around 4. I was lucky and it was only me with him, but if he is drifting there will be 2 people in the boat, if it is wading there will be up to 3 people, plus him also.

Good fishing Tom. I bumped into the same shoal this evening. My word. don't they fight for the size of them!!
Most of mine came 'on the drop' rather than on the retreive. Christ they put trout and bass to shame in the fighting stakes.
