Float fishing marks

Hi guys,

Hope all is well

Well after an eventful day of getting locked out of the house (long story) I popped into Sammy's fishing tackle and bait to stock up on a few items. What I didn't plan to buy though (call it an impluse purchase) was a couple of floats which is something I've never done before so thought I'd give it a bash!

Hence the question of all questions, does anyone know of any good float fishing marks around the south coast? As always willing to do a bit of travelling from Hedge End area so that isn't an issue.

Really in need of making this a summer to remember as I just found out I'm a daddy to be for the first time so I expect my days out to be few and far between if the Mrs has anything to say about it!

WHENEVER THE SON AND I GO OUT FLOATING,WE TEND TO GO DOWN CHESIL,WONT BE TO LONG NOW FOR,GARS/POLLOCK/SCAD/AND MACS
ALL GOOD FUN ON VERY LIGHT TACKLE.

NITE TIME WITH A STAR LITE PUSHED IN THE TOP OF A GOOD CIGAR TYPE FLOAT WE BRING GOOD RESULTS.

Hi m8 Brighton marina wall seen a alot of fish caught there.Pollock,gars and mackies.

Always take the wind and current direction into account when float fishing. Ideally you want the wind to be not too strong and from the direction which will take the float out into the water. Also if the current is strong such as in harbour entrances, the float will travel very quickly away from you which is obviously not a good idea. My favourite spot for this activity is best when there is a light westerly or south-westerly breeze and a slow tidal current. I have had some great fun with garfish in the past - a bit of mackerel strip with the hook about 30/40 cms below the surface. Also choose a bright yellow or orange float top so that you don't loose sight of it when its around 80 yds out.

Langston harbour and portsmouth harbour both offer deep water for float fishing winking

I fish Shoreham on the float a lot - in the estuary itself by the Coastwatch tower with live prawns for bass on the rising tide, and then on the western harbour arm lower section with half sandeel or mackerel strip for mackerel, garfish and occasional twaite shad. You need a sliding float rig for the bass on prawns - sometimes I'm fishing 15ft deep or more!

Flattie - now this'll sound like a stupid question but where abouts in Portsmouth Harbour can fish? As popular as I'm sure the harbour can be a nice quiet area to relax would be a bonus (and aviod the "no fishing" signs).

Any guidance as to a fishable area would be great

I'd give the Portsmouth harbour entrance near the Round Tower a go on the float and I'd expect pollack and maybe bass as well as any mackerel etc that might be in the area. South Parade Pier would be another option, as would Clarence Pier (assuming you can still fish off there?). Used to get small pollack and mackerel there on sandeel/mackerel strip and even cooked prawns!

To add to PompeyKev's post......

Near the Round Tower you have Clarence Pier. At low water you have a chance to chuck your bait in the channel, of course on smaller tides its ideal, bigger tides you will have trouble holding bottom. Smoothhounds can be plentiful here but rarely go past 9lbs. You can fish to the left and right for chance of Bass, Wrasse, Pollock. The left of the pier seems to be a holding area for Bass and Mackeral. winking

The Round Tower. Good spot that can chuck up anything. I have seen Spotted Ray's, good size bass to live baits and Mackeral, Pollock and Wrasse caught here. winking

Go around the round tower to a white wall. You can fish off that wall a spot thats know as the hot walls. You will be fishing in the Pompey run, access to deeper water and you have every chance of Mackeral, bass, pollock and wrasse. winking

Further around you have a spot called the benches. A very popular spot for bass using mackeral baits or garfish chunk. Be aware though it can be quite snaggie so braided lines is reccomended winking

Carry on and you reach the Spice Island Inn. Another popular spot for bass fans and there are even lobster caught on fresh mackeral baits. winking

Around from that and you reach the Camber docks where the I.O.W ferry docks. A very good spot for bass and mackeral. To be honest a chuck it and chance area with a few species readily caught there. winking

Fishing was probably a lot better then m8 as i would agree winking

. From now onwards to end August seems to be the time for spinning/plugging. I personally look forward to live baiting around end of July winking

well i dont think i could add anything to what everyone else has said exept congratulations on becoming a dad for the first time....i have a girl that is one and altho i dont go out as much as i used to,i am very greatfull for the times i do get out.ENJOY
