Fishing in April - Begginer help needed!

Hi all,
I am planning to go fishing in Herne Bay and Whistable area this easter.
I have not caught a fish from this area - the only fish ive caught were in a harbour that i found u r not alloud to fish in. Nice Mullet big grin

I was thinking of fishing off the shore but want to know if i should fish off a pier, the actual beach or some random rocks?
I also need to know wat species i could catch and how?
And finally how long it takes to catch a fish cos previouly i have got bored and left - usually bad weather - so i don know how long it should take.

not to sure of the area myself, but likely spicies would be a mixture as its the turn of the seasons so could be a spring codling, flattie's ,whiting , skate, school bass, doggies baits would depend on the spicies as a lot of summer fish take rag, mackeral,bluey, squid and sometimes lug does fish well,, rigs would depend if its clean or rough ground but you sometimes can't go wrong with a double cliped down and a pully also a flapper rig will a lot of the time get you into the fish owing that they fish different heights of the water,, as for the time myslef will do 3hr's up and 3hr's down sometimes more down depending how its fishing,, as for time of catch will depend as myself leaves a bait in the water about 15mins mayb shorter if the tides running hard as it soon washes the bait out (if your using worm) other baits can last longer, but then that will depends on the crabs,, only thing no 1 can tell you is if you'll catch,, if its a deep slopping beach then try for over 100yd's and when the tides fully up drop it to about 40 as you will find that some fish come close into the low tide line

i know this is not much help about the area but it'll be a start

Don't know Herne Bay but would imagine that the groynes at Whitstable will produce some school bass (or maybe something bigger) to worm baits by the time Easter is here. It's often a good ploy to aim for just past the end of the groyne as the tide rises as there is often a depression/pool at the groyne end where crabs, shrimps and other shellfish accumulate - bass know this and will be nosing around these areas as the tide rises. Basically, when there's a foot or two of water at the groyne end you'll have a chance. If aiming for larger bass use larger baits (whole calamari squid or a peeler crab if they've started moulting by then). Don't cast right at the groyne, though, or you'll lose your tackle! You want to be near it, not tangled around it.

Otherwise two hook flappers with worm would give you a chance of school bass and flatfish I would imagine.

Hi. all good advice. you will be hard pushed to catch at whitstable, try a little further down towards tankerton. past the water works herne bay side of the sand bank its hard fishing though. Hampton pier is a good starter point. best fish to the left, not straight out from the end as breaker rocks. Anywhere from Hampton to herne bay. off the arm at herne bay harbour is popular or go little further along the coast for reculver. 3 hook boom for flatties and whiting using lug or rigs as suggested for your squid/blueys.
all ground pretty much clear of snags. careful fishing reculver if windy or just after a blow or all you get is weed. fishing a night tide after dark your best bet for a catch.

I have been thinking in float fishing along the side of Hampton pier...
Or maybe float fishing at the end of a groyne - i could probable stand on the groyne and fish off it if the waves were not too big.
I was thinking of hooking a live ragworm to draw in any fish i can find, what u think?
Any fishing trip reports of the area would be good.

Best place I've seen for float fishing is at reculver. climb down the rocks at the car park (very careful). seen people fishing there. climb down just before the jetty part and you can fish sort of round the corner of the rocks, keeps you out of line of sight
