By far the best and most common bait for Smoothhound is Peeler Crab

Hermit crab is by far the best, then followed by peeler and hardback crabs, then squid. |

On the right day Hermit Crab is unbeatable....but I've seen days when everything else catches and hermit baits sit untouched for some reason. Peeler is good if you are expecting other species as well as smoothies as it will be picked up by pretty much anything. I've had some good catches on whole Calamari.
I used to know a guy who fished in the Blackwater regularly with Edible Peelers and he swore by them for smoothies, though I've never tried them myself around here. |

Yes Hermit Crab a top bait how could I miss it out :?:
I guess as it can be a little bit more difficult to get hold of for most.
Cheers

Need a drop net with some mackerel in when fishing to catch the old hermit. |

I caught a few small ones on lug or rag in Norfolk but would never have fished with those baits normally when targetting them . Hermit crab, peeler and have tried softies too. When they are around they seem to take whatever bait I happen to be using. Primarily though, would favour crabs. Good luck. |
