Hey guys im after a pair of new rods to go with my new multipliers. After years of using fixed spools i switched over to multipliers and im now after a nice ish pair of rods to match the new reels

i am currently using a pair of Shakespear FS 12ft Zeta ( pre ING2 ) They are ok for the money but are relatively heavy, very very stiff and not very sensitive.

now as always ive googled and looked on the forum and look through loads of brochures but i just cant decide

I want to spend £100 each and ideally no more. i dont need it for power casting am i am a competant caster. And i fish on relatively clean ground

ive shortlisted 3 rods but i cannot decide between the 3

Greys Grx-s 13ft Multiplier
Sonik SK3
Abu Garcia Esprit

the sonik and greys are appealing with their lifetime warranty

i tried a few casts with my mate greys 12 6 5oz bass rod and it felt nice and cast well. i did notice this rod had a relatively thin tip for a 5oz rod. is the grx-s like this their are no local dealers that stock greys stuff

i am in no rush but advice would be greatly appreciated

tight lines for 2011

Hi buttonz, Know what you mean about rod tips although if they are full carbon I doubt whether you would have much trouble. However, I was determined last year to find a rod around the 12 - 14 ft mark with a more substantial tip, believing that it would give me a bit more oomph for my casting style which is a modified OTG action. Eventually I discovered that the Abu Hellbenders had a 3 mm tip (nice and thick) and having owned an Abu uptider for some years which has proved to be as tough as old boots, I bought one. I now have a pair and am very pleased so far (they go out at least once a week in my case). The particular versions which I have (14 ft FS) were just a tad over the £100 mark at the time and may have gone up a bit since but I believe there are other vesions. You may also like to consider Rovex as I have heard some good reports but don't know what their tips are like - suggest you take a steel tape when you go hunting and check tip diameters as I did. Not sure about Greys as there were some reports last year of them busting. Hope this helps.

if you google ABU HELLBENDER, there is a retailer very near the top who is retailing these superb rods for £99 thats almost half price !!!!!!

also the PENN POWERSTICK is meant to be pretty good

i hope this is of some use to you

Hmm, I rather suspected that you might have this problem. Shame really becuase they are dam good rods for the money. You might try asking Veals if they know of any possibilty of multi versions in the near future, I find that they can be quite helpful at times and being just about the biggest and best mail order outfit, they may know of future events. I think you have a bit of time to sort this out because we are now in the "dead" season and there will not be many fish around for the next two months.

Hi Buttonz,

If you look at Mainwarring Tackle in Wales there are a grey's stockist and are doing the best prices at the moment, I have just bought a pair of

Greyflex

Multiplier Rods to replace my pair of Daiwea Supercast Mk2 (Paul Kerry's)

and am really pleased with them.

Similar to the Grey's GRX, the the tips are thin but you should have no

problem with this, I use them for Pendulum Casting they have plenty of

power and are a very light rod, bite detection should also be great.

Tim cool.

Ps:- Also Grey's Rods have a lifetime warranty. happy happy happy

cheers for the reply

i looked at eh greyflex too as although a little over budget it does appear to be a higher quality rod compared to the grx

just gotta make a decision but every now and again ill find a apost about broken sonik sk3 and greys rods too which is off putting

thanks for all your replies guys

i could not really find anything on the Catana. see one in the tackle shop and liked the discreet all black look. but nothning on here or WSF

i see a Shakespear Salt Mx 12ft in the shop. had a feel and liked it. The guy in the shop did try and persuade me to buy a Daiwa Sandstorm or a Shimano venegence but i hated the yellow but on the daiwa and the white on the shimano.

came back home and did a bit of research on here and WSF and i could not find a bad word about the Salt MX. Now shakespear was a brand i wanted to avoid to be honest as i wanted a rod with a proper name, like abu daiwa or greys but with so many positive reviews and me liking the way they felt it seemed like a no brainer

Esp as i ordered 2 Salt 13ft MX from the glasgow angling centre who was doing a deal on them... £96 delivered for 2 rods. Loads of people paid upwards of £70 each for theirs and were happy so £40 must be a bargain

lets hope i like the way they fish... not the end of the world if i dont. Its not like i spent £300 on two rods and hated them. hate to think how much money id lose selling them on.

Hi Buttonz,

Shakespeare have come a long way in the last 15yrs or so and a lot of there

gear is good quality at a fair price.

Let me know how you get on with them it's always good to have reports on

tackle.

no worries snagger

would of loved some greyflex-s's but my wife has jsut told me we need a new child seat for my boy ( £300 notes ) so gotta spend in order of prioritories big grin

However there are loads of good reports on WSF so fingers crossed they will be as good as they say. The RRP apparently is £107 so by no means a cheap rod i guess

if only tackle shop started selling greys rods at the same price

will have em by next week so aim to get out next weekend with them. should be a good match for my 6501's
