Can you help
I,m having a problem keeping lugworm alive. I collected my worms on satuday morning, by the time i wanted use them on a midnight tide alot of them had turned to mush. I have kept them in the paper that they came in, I kept them fairly cool in the boot. should I change the paper regularly? Is there anything else I came try? Or was I supplied with crap bait?
Would I be better off using Rag?
Doe,s anyone have any ideas.

The paper should be changed regularly also remove any dead worms as these will kill off all the others.
Cheers

Hi Sadsod.....i always change the paper my lug are in , pretty much as soon as i get them.
Another thing i do is put the lug in a container with fresh sea water asap
you could also order you're bait and pick it up at the last possible moment

hi sadsod i agree with the others about the paper and sea water but in my view the main problem wood be that its to hot in your boot try puting them in the fridge after changeing the paper .or if there dead by sat night id say your being given old stock ,open them in the shop and make sure there all alive at the time you bye them

what maybe your problem is that the worms were contained in a fridge before you brought then from the shop and the temp's outside are not cold enough to go leaving in the boot of your car just yet, what i do with my worms once iv dug em is keep them in fresh sea water like the shops and also in the fridge, check everyday for dead one's and change the water (if you able to) and they will last longer then you think as ill also take them fishing in a bucket with the same water so as not to shock them with putting them in paper, if your not able to do these things then you need to pick your days when you get them from a shop as sometimes the bait could of been in there all weekend or even more so ya may not always get fresh worms

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
Keeping them in sea water sounds a good idea (unfortunately, the nearest beach to me is Southend, 25 miles away).
I will make a point of changing the paper regulaly and transfer the bait to sea water when I reach the beach. I do order my bait and pick it up on the day I intend to use it.
Also I think that there might be a chance that the bait is not as fresh as I am led to beleive.
Thanks again for the help.

unless i am using them straight away, which if i am i keep them in the bucket with the frozen bait to keep them cool, otherwise i get them home and wrap them individually in 3 sheets of paper together, 15 or so to a packet, put them in a plastic bag and then in the bottom of the fridge. i change them every couple a days. i have kept them alive this way for up to a week, no problem, even small stuff. |
