Hi there,
I've been offered a 12ft, 2-section Jarvis Walker beachcaster and wondered if anyone uses, or has used the Jarvis Walker Mirage 4-6oz at all please?
There are 2 J.Walker rods, either the Devil which casts 28-70g or the Mirage which does 4-6oz. As I already have a bass/flattie rod, it'd be the Mirage I'm looking at.
Apart from a cheap new second rod, I'd like a rod with a stiff enough blank but with light action as the rod I'm using at the moment I find the action too stiff. It's rated up to 8oz though so perhaps the lighter, 6oz max rated Mirage is what I need?
It really has to be wound up to get any distance so a rod that can easily put 4-5oz leads out a decent distance without having to go nutz is kinda what I'm after?
I can't manage a few hundred quid on a rod unfortunately so I've set a price range for this rod at around £30-£50, this one inparticular comes with a JW Mirage or DP Strike f/s reel for £45?

Hi Eskee, a decent used Dawia supercast might be just the ticket they do a 12ft or 13ft in light-medium ground with brilliant bite detection the STS12m or f 4-8oz. or for a bit more grunt the STS12pm still with good bite detection and great on rough ground.
I bought a nearly new one from my local tackle dealer for £60
hope this helps

Hi there Clive,
Thanks for the reply and advice
Sounds like you got a steal mate!, nice one as they retail at approx £180-£200+ I think don't they?
Unfortunately, despite even lurking around on ebay too, I can't seem to find anything as nice as that for my price
Had a look at Glasgow Angling's catalogue at the Diawa you mentioned, aliminium oxide guides I see too. That's a bloody nice rod!
Btw, what's the STS12PM Power Multi?, a stiffer blank maybe?
Of course I'll keep my eyes open but the best deal I've seen so far is a IN2 by Shakspeare, not anywhere near as good a rod as the Diawa I don't think
It's one of those situations like waiting on a bus is buying a 2nd hand rod I think Clive, none when you want one!

Hi there Clive,
I think I've made the right decision and have a 12ft Abu Enticer on order
It's rated upto 6oz although I've read it can be a tad wobbly with a 6oz, it casts a 4 or 5oz a good distance effortlessly.
It was Sea Angler rod of the month or something akin to that not so long ago apparently?. It eventually came down to a toss up between a Ron Thomson Evo 12ft 3-6oz/Okuma Electron FD80 f/s combo for £35 or the Abu on it's own for £40 so I decided to go for the Abu......hope I've made the right choice
Hopefully it should be here this week so I'll post back with my findings and new p.b casting distance with a 5oz grip lead
Cheers, Andy |
