Hello, a few questions if anyone can help out a first-timer...
(I've feathered/float fished for mackeral many times, but have been given a beachcaster and would like to try to catch some cod, never fished off the bottom before)
Thinking of trying Deal Pier, Dover harbour or Dungerness for cod, within the next 4weeks - Can anyone offer advice for any of these locations -- if you've been successful here, what rig/bait did you use? Where do i get this bait from (can i find it/dig it up myself?)
I know its best to go there and see what other people are doing/using, but its a bit of a trek from Orpington! and i'd like to get the right tackle as much as possible before i go |

Hello bruce,
You have already been fishing at one of your coastal venues already , But i'll post my advice anyway, it may be of help to you. out of the three memtioned i would go for Dungerness for the following reasons. Deal pier is ok if you get a good spot. Both corners of the pier are snaggy. On top of that you have the local angling club that seem to be mostly pensioners that have a little hut at the end of the pier. Then they cast out with 4oz weights that don't hold bottom and drag your line with them. Bless em. Dover is now full of imigrants that with respect don't have a clue how to fish in british waters. When i was down there you couldn't swing a cat. Oh and i had more weights wizz past my ear hole that you could shake a stick at. The fish they were catching were very small , but they kept them anyway. Not doing their bit for fish levels. Doing a slight side track onto carp fishing , our Lake baliff caught then cooking a 101b carp on the river bank 8O . Anyway back to the see fishing. Yes choose Dungerness and fish the point. The water is well deep and plenty of breakers to stir the bottom. Dungy lug is best and can get it at most good tackle shops or visit one of the local tack;e shops on the edge of Dungerness beach. Let me know how it goes bud  |
