Went to deal pier on wednesday evening after reading the article in SA about catching smut, HT was at 6 and we wanted to fish the ebb like it said, so we got there about 6.45. went right off the end of the pier using lug, squid and crab cocktails on pulley pennel 2/0 rigs. on the pier we managed to catch 4 nice size dogfish (2 - 3lb) between us. we had to come off the pier at half 9 as it shut at ten but the guy wanted to close up early, so we went on the beach, about 200yds to the right of the pier. using the same techniques still, at 11 my rod went mental, and something was pulling the line to the left and right up and down the beach, definately a nice fish. after a real struggle to get it in, it turned out to be a my first smoothound, which weighed 5lb 9oz, so was very pleased with that big grin big grin
nothing else to report for the rest of the night and we packed up at one, but a very good trip as it was the biggest fish i had ever caught big grin big grin

unfortunately my pc wont let me load the photos for some reason sad

cheers
Matt big grin

Congratulations on the smoothound. I'm yet to catch one.

Was thinking of doing deal pier next weekend as its always been good to me other than losing tackle but have never fished the beach.

Given the comments on this post, I'm seriously thinking about trying the beach.

Keep catching!

Colin.
