Hi there,
I've re-found this wonderful hobby after at least 15yrs through a friend who has just gotten into sea fishing coming from a fly fishing background and wondered what/where there are any good tackle shops?.
Is Mike's Tackle in Portobello still open yes?, if I remember he had a large selection with prices ranging from cheap to ridiculous? lol
As far as tackle & rods go I'm pretty well sorted out other than not having any beachcasters anymore & my boat rod is missing a line guide. However, I do have a 9ft uptide rod which is fine for boat work so unless there are giant skate in the Forth I should be fine
Reel wise I'm fine, a Penn LongBeach 65 multi for boat & a huge DAM BC180 f/s reel for one beachcaster
I do have a bass rod & reel which are both fine although if anyone has contact details for DAM so I could send off for spare parts that would be excellent?.....a DAM Quick SE150 is my bass/spinning reel but is slipping like a very slippy thing at the moment
Best Regards, Andy |

Hi Andy,
I would suggest you head into the Glasgow Angling centre ( junction 16 M8).Okay its not Edinburgh but the selection of tackle/prices is well worth the journey. From Edinburgh I would estimate 45 mins but well worth it

Hi pter,
Much obliged for that link buddy, it is a wee bit more hassle to get to but looks well worth it as you say. Going by the pics of the place on their website it seem to be massive!.
From where I am in East Lothian, Glasgow is roughly 1.5hrs?, maybe a wee bit more.
We are planning a trip through to fish on the West coast sometime soon so a visit there will have to be on the itinerary
we're heading upto Mike's Tackle in Portobello, Edinburgh today before we go out tonight so it'll be interesting to see how it's changed since the last time I was there more than 15yrs ago
Cheers, Andy |

No probz mate,
It'd be a pleasure to wet a line with you when you come over , infact my mate Weegi (who's also just joined this forum) have a 6hr boat trip from Dunbar arranged possibly for sometime next month?
Mike's Tackle is still open by the way and just as full of goodies as I remember, while Weegi picked up a nice new 10ft bass rod & f/s reel I decided I wasn't going home empty handed so now own a new 14ft beachcaster
If only our trip to Torness later last night was as fruitful , that's been only one small school bass over the last three w/end visits. I spoke to a couple of lads from Northumberland who'd had one fish around the 3/4lb mark all day, it was taken on a single rag.
Anyways, keep in touch mate,
Cheers, Andy |

pter mate but you are more than welcome to join us
It's Weegi who's organizing it and liaising with the skipper from Dunbar so I'm really awaiting on a date myself
I do know that it's got to fit in with his holidays from work though of which he has a couple of days left to take before xmas or he looses them
Possibly toward the end of Aug/beginning of September?? (what seems like a lifetime away!). £25 a head for 6hrs fishing paid to the skipper on the day
Unless we want to go somewhere else, drifting off Thorntonloch beach just past Torness usually produces a codling or two, my best from that mark is 7lb jigging hokkai rigs
Eitherway I'll keep in touch and update you as I know more myself |
