Hi I'm new to swff as in going to try for the the first time next week. I have a 9' 7/9# rod and 3 reels.
My question's are can any body reccomend a low priced set of flies and low price line (f,i,s). The reason for low price is funds vs cost of 3 lines and flies.
Many thanks. Nick. |

Hi Nick, Better to buy one single decent Line than three cheap ones. It will only cause you misery buying cheap because it will hamper your casting and Fish catching ability. With the warmer weather coming on you can get away with a Floating line only, as the Fish will be feeding predominantly in shallow water. If you use a longish Flourocarbon leader, should you need to get the Fly down a bit deeper, simply allow the Fly to sink longer before you retrieve it and use a slower strip. I use a Floating line almost exclusively from the shore and as yet have found no need for intermediate or sinking lines.
As for Flies most on here tie their own I think, but Fulling Mill do carded packs suitable for Bass Fishing that are reasonably priced.
Failing that try Ebay.
Hope that helps.
Chris. |

Hi Chris.
That all makes sence to me. I prefer the idea of buy quality tackle but didn't want to turn up ready to go only to find it's the wrong tackle.
Last year I spent a day float fishing, rather a day watching bass leg it with the float or strip the hook bare with out one catch. Came away sure that if I had either a fly or spinning set up I would have caught a few fish. This year I intend to do both but as I haven't done any spinning before I thought I'd start with the fly.
Thanks for the advice. Nick. |

No problem Nick, as Mick says some nice Guys on here and plenty of good advice available from everyone.
Theres really no feeling in Angling like catching Bass on the Fly!
Best of luck in your ventures.

Welcome to the brotherhood Nick.
Like wightfish, I use a floating line exclusively. However, if you want to fish deeper water or improve fly turn over while casting into the wind then a 'poly leader' is a very good investment. These come in different densities, from slow to super-fast sink and are quickly and easily attached to your fly line.
Best of luck.

Pirates lines are great - especially for the price. I use them for freshwater fly-fishing. He is planning a saltwater range soon. Not yet ventured to fly fishing in the sea yet, slowly gathering the tackle: rod, waders, a reel and line - so nearly there. Summer - Hopefully. |

Thanks everyone for the advice. Got most of whatI need. Now time to see if a brook angler can cut it as a swffer. Off to Lyme Regis for a week, so a prediction of booking casting lessons when I get back is a good bet. |
