Whilst resisting the urge to plagiarise the opening line of Donald where's your trousers, I have indeed just come down from the Isle of Skye!
Spent a glorious week with my Mother and friends on the (Officially) fourth best island in the world!!!!
Of course being a passionate missionary for the the gospel according to the Salty Fly i could not leave my kit in Southampton, Could I?
Skye and the nearby mainland are undoubtedly well underfished in terms of sport fishing with rod & Line. My step dad took us to a mark on the mainland near Eilean Donan castle as it has very deep water and is a known mark for Pollock.
Well....
Guess who connected with a fish on the first retreive? Yep, the guy using jellies
But it wasn't long before i found the right depth using a fast sinking line of about a foot/sec and a weighted olive and white clouser I started to catch fish of upto 3lb in weight. What a rush on the fly gear! The first run as the pollock dived deep to into the weed and rocks was amazing and after half an hour my arms were so tired i had to rest.
Brief rest and back into the fishing when a shoal of Mackeral made their appearance and i caught several to a pound or so.
My step dad (and SF Juinor) caught well on the Jellies and enjoyed the day but he did admit that he was dubious of how the fly would perform and was amazed that the bigger fish fell to the fly rather than the jellies.
He will of course give it a go and i feel another convert has been succesfully shown the light!
If you go to Skye make sure you take a fast sinking line, find some deep water with a rocky terrain and I reckon you'll have a fantastic time. We fished on two days for about 4 hours per trip and I reckon I had 30 fish.
Skye and Lochalsh (to me) is about as good as it gets in terms of sheer geographical beauty and the Flora & Fauna you can see are amazing. We saw Seals, Porpoises. Otters and Sea Eagles to name a few. We ate brilliant local seafood and game and drank plenty of 80 Shilling with a few drams
I'm sorry have not included photo's at the moment but i am working on that.
I will go back in the summer and will be taking my kit again.
Now, where are my Troosers?............
