Seen these used on boat rigs-what are the advantages(if any)over more conventional shapes? I have seen smaller versions used by carp anglers but again not sure why the ball shape, thanks,Mick big grin

Hi Mick, The advantages of the ball weight on a boat is that the end tackle can be trotted downtide so as to cover more ground and to get your bait out of the Scare area of the boat.
Cheers

Well, a charter skipper I've been out with a few times reckons that the cannonball leads snag less easily than slimmer shapes. Whether that is true depends on what the snags are like I would have thought. Lots of theories in fishing, many contradictory.

I wouldn't have thought myself that they make trotting back any easier; that's just a case of lifting the lead and letting the tide carry it down a little way.

I tend to use them when I'm drifting. One charter boat skipper I know actively discouages people using them at anchor as he says they cause a lot of tangles with other fishermen as they roll around in the tide, an advantage on the drift though.
