Spinning and Float-fishing.

During the warmer months have any members tried spinning (not feathering) or float-fishing for fish, particularly bass. I have spent many pleasant sessions, around dawn or dusk, practising these pursuits with a good deal of success.
Of course, not every venue will be fishable by these methods but most are. Catching a bass, even a two-punder on a light spinning-rod, 10lb line and a 1oz Toby, or such, is the sport of angling at its purest and best.
Similarly, fishing worm-baits or fish-strips beneath a sea-float on light tackle is very rewarding. Both methods certainly beat catching fish on heavy lines and heavy weights, which the fish have to unsportingly drag around whilst trying to escape.
A competent sea-angler needs to have more than one weapon in his armoury of fishing tackle and employ various methods for catching fish.
Being a 'one-trick-pony' is humdrum, one needs to expand their horizons and experience total fishing, not just 'chuck-and-luck'.

I have Float fished Hengistbury Head groyne many times over the years during the summer months and its a lot of fun big grin

and as you say makes a change from the heavy gear. I would spin or use a float by day fishing for Mackerel, Bass or Garfish and focus on Pollack in the evening.

Tried spinning in the summer. Didn't catch nowt but then it was my first attempt! Having said that, I did find that lazy cast retrieve thing very relaxing! :lol:

Have done quite a bit of both - with mixed results. Locally its a struggle because of water clarity (or rather the lack of it) but have had regular catches when I've fished Devon or the Kent coast. Every year I tend to do more and more lure fishing because its so convenient - you can grab the gear and do a couple of hours after work in the summer without the planning required with normal bait. You also need less gear.

As you say, the light gear is more sporting and the constant activity seems to make it a bit less boring on the quiet days. I'm definately a fan and have just purchased a leadhead mould to try some maribou and bucktail lures out this year for the local Bass.
