I am new to the Gosport area.
I used to fish every summer in Cornwall when growing up. Always spinning/floating for mackerel/pollock/bass.
I currently own a 10ft spinning rod and fixed spool reel
I have recently inherited a 12.5 ft beachcaster.
I am looking to get back into fishing again (after a few years absence)
However
I haven't used a beachcaster before.
I have no idea of the rigs/baits/times for fishing in the Gosport Area
I do live within easy walking distance of Browndown/Stokes Bay/Gilkicker point/ Haslar wall. So i would be thinking of fishing from those areas.
Any advice would be gratefully accepted. From the basic how to tie the rigs to the more closely guarded best spot information!! |

Hi ya Cornish & welcome to the site
I used to be the same as my Granparents lived in St Austell so I was always there in the summer fishing with my Dad from either Mevagissey or Looe
Where to start.......
Look at the left hand of the page under resources & sea fishing tackle, this will give you key info on the basics
Next is to get over a park and practice your casting as in a lot of cases distance does matter.
Read the posts from your forum area including old posts, as this will give you some excellent tips & info
Baits....Locations & best baits, hopefully someone who knows & fishes your area should be along soon to help you with that
If you are not sure of something just post a question and someone will answer you .
Good luck in all your fishing adventures |

Why go to a park and practice when Stokes bay is in walking distance ?
Take two rods pick up some bait on the beach , fish one rod and practice with the other till you get bored then fish both. You don`t get the occasional 4lb plaice at the park like you do at stokes. |

Thanks for the good advice, i only have the one rod at the moment, and cant really afford any more (just moved! drained my wallet)
Although i may see if i can save a bit (not go to the pub!) and get another beachcaster rod (any recommendations - on a limited budget!).
In the meantime i'm itching to get out there!
I'm seeing the water every day---its just daring me to fish it!
Where are the local tackle shops? I think im going to start off using a one hook flapper (as its a simple rig to set up) on my one beachcaster, just to get back into the swing of it!
I am undecided about whether to buy the rig components and make a rig or buy a ready made rig, just to see how they are constructed and allow me to get straight to the business of losing tackle/tangling lines/bringing back clean hooks or maybe even catching fish!
I plan to get out sometime next fri/sat/sun in the early morning or evening.
Any else heading to the Gilkicker/stokes bay area next weekend? |

If you go for a walk across stokes bay at low tide after the weekend there`s a good chance you will pick up half a dozen sets of tackle, have done it several times myself . You can also suss out the fishing area and pick up some slipper limpet for bait. If you google `Daves fishing tackle' gosport there is some info on local fishing. Good bait at daves as well. The only other shop i use when heading for hayling is Rodsnreels of farlington . www.rodsnreelsonline.com |

COMING ORIGINALLY FROM GOSPORT MYSELF I HAVE FISHED MOST THE VENUES
I RECOMMEND HASLAR SEA WALL AT THIS TIME OF YEAR AS YOU CAN FISH BY YOUR CAR AND NORMALLY NEVER BLANK.
IF YOU FANCY STOKESBAY/BROWNDOWN I RECOMEND GOING TO THE BROWNDON CARPARK AT THE EDGE OF STOKES BAY AND WALK ABOUT 100m INTO BROWDOOWN JUST PAST THE RIVER INLET.
THE MILLENIUM PIER BY GOSPORT FERRY IS ALWAYS WORTH A TRY AS THE LARGE BASS/MULLET ROAM AROUND THE BOATS.
THERE ARE ALWAYS PEOPLE FISHING AT HILLHEAD BUT I HAVE NEVER CAUGHT A FISH AT THAT VENUE.
THE HAMBLE RIVER MOUTH AT WARSASH IS ALWAYS WORTH A TRY BUT I HAVE NEVER CAUGHT ANYTHING BIG THERE.
IF YOU ARE NEW TO FISHING I ALSO RECOMEND THE BOOK BY SEA ANGLER, CALLED "STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO BAITS AND RIGS". IT DETAILS ALL THE BASICS YOU NEED TO KNOW.
HAPPY FISHING!!!!!!! |
