Hey Mog, I went out on Monday night for a few hours and caught loads of whiting. I also caught a cod, but it was 2 inches too small and I didn't fancy a really big fine!
This weekend you're off are you? I use squid or mackeral as bait, they're quite good. I don't ever use rag when I'm on a boat actually, so stick with some squid if you can get your hands on some, then 'when you catch a mackeral, cut it up and use that!

I only use jigging whenI'm fishing for Mackeral really, so I reckon baiting will be best for you.

Let me know how you get on!

Hi Vix

We had a fantastic day out fishing. 8 lads and only 3 of us had ever caught fish before. Fantastic weather and great fishing. Averaged about 10 fish each. Species caught were pouting, whiting, mackrel, coalie, pollock, cod & ling. We must have caught at leat 50lb of cod, biggest being about 6lb. I got a pouting, whiting, several mackrel, and a few cod (about 12 lb worth) biggest being 5lb. Biggest fish was a 7lb ling. There was a lot of 3, 4lb and a couple to 5/6lb. Didn't have scale so had to estimate (and we did round down as there were some fat fish). Most of the bigger cod were caught on lug and rag with a few on squid and mackrel. One lad never fished before and got 2 x 4lb cod on one trace. Great day out for the lads. We filled one and a hlf bins in our first hour with cod but things slowed down a little on that front. Couldn't have asked for a better trip as even the skipper was lost for words. Beginners luck I put it down to.

Glad to hear you had a really good time Mog!
Are you going out to sea again sometime as you had such a good day?
I went out the other eveing and caught LOADS of Mackarel. I'm sick of seeing the damn things now! sad
I'm going out again today, but I'll probably end up with tonnes of mackarel again
I'll let you know how I get on,

Hi Vix

Luckily we didn't catch many mackrel when we were out as we were fishing the wrecks. Bloody things are a pest when targetting other fish. The lads definitely want to go out again in about a month as they loved it. After fishing on Friday and my mate catching a 4 1/4 codling I realised we seriously underestimated the size of our fish (as we didn't have scales on the boat). The ling must have been 8 - 9lbs and the cod around 7 - 8lbs. Still, we caught that many on the day that the size didn't really matter. Let me know how you get on chick
