hi guys, I general beach fish, but have a few charter boat trips planned this year and fancied purchasing myself a rod or two.

A friend has told me its best to purchase two rods a boat rod and an uptider but my father in law just said save the money and get a decent ish uptider as they will be capable to do both jobs.

I have a boat reel only a fladen chieftan, but will serve a purpose whilst I get used to boat fishing and a few fixed spool reels ( I use for beach casting) for which I would used for an uptide rod.

I will only use the rod or ords occassionally for now so want to try and pick up something cheap but dont want to buy rubbish.

I have seen a few rods for sale in the below £30.00 bracket. any suggestions

thus far I am tempted by
Shakespeare IN2 boat rod 20ib -30ib £7.95

Leeder ocean roar boat rod £12.00

Fisheagle Atlas boat rod and matching uptider £19.00

Ron Thompson Kamikaze 7ft or Hardcore II- £20.00

ABu Garcia 7 boat rod - £25.00

any thoughts gents does anyone have any of these and can give a review

to be honest for the prices I am not to bothered on their life span as such, but whether the rod is useable

thanks for any input guys

Go for an uptider as it will do both jobs as you friend says also it will be handy for pier fishing.

If you want a rod that does both jobs well, I have nothing but praise for the Abu Suveran uptide rods. They convert from uptider to boat rod with am extendable butt system. They will cost more than a Shakespear, but you do get a far better rod. I've been using a pair of the original Suverans for many years now. They are as good now as they were new several years ago. Many of the cheap uptiders fail to achieve the balance of tip sensitivity and mid section power.

Dead right Tomcat they are the 'Nuts' can't argue that but the chap is on a budget of around £30, still can't hurt to take a look at the Abu, never know might be the answer, two for the price of one, could work out cheaper in the long run !!!

Cheers JOLI winking

Have a look at the Abu Esprit boat/uptide combo rod , its just a slightly less fancy version of the Suveran. It has the twist n lock handle and an extension piece to make it into an uptider. I have one and it does both jobs well. 25lbs class , 4-6oz casting but will handle 250g jigs.
I hardly see mine at the moment as it keeps gettng borrowed by mates who are to mean to spend their money.
try alderneyangling.com for a good deal on it or the suveran.

I can recommend the Suveran combi too, though it is pricier.

If you are fishing fairly light leads (up to 3oz) for bass, say, then an inexpensive spinning rod that casts 2 or 3 oz, 8 or 9 ft will work very well. That's what I've often used in the past.
