myself and westy decided to have a go on the pier as the winds had been up and was sure it would of kicked up something so we arrived at 7:45ish armed with a number of bait's.. rigs were for me (pennel pully's 4/0)both rods,, westy (a double pully rig with 3/0's)both rods,, at about 8ish all rod's went out and then came back again NOTHING!!(bait intact as it went out) and that was the story of the night using all sorts of cocktails you could think of there was just nothing.. then high tide came and went and still not even a sniff westy thought he had a bite but i didnt see it so dont know. left at around half 1 as the cold started to set in and it was just dire.. as you know ya dont know unless you try.. |

great report there, although at the moment i would scale down to 1/0 flappers for the chance of a fish,im having more success with those.

i doubt weather small hooks would of done any better due to there werent even no crabs about as you'll know thats a food sorce for the greedy cod/codling even a drop net didnt have anything which normally you'll get something in there.. so as the water's still cold there further out to warmer climes or maybe even breeding late but another couple of weeks may throw something up,, as last time i went i had 1 codling and put a pic on here but there were crabs also feeding so im sure every1 will say that this cold spell has thrown the cod right offand even the crabs deeper in the sand,, so mayb if we do get a spring run that it wont be till late and last longer,, heres me for hoping and every 1 else |

We went about a week and half ago from the beech. We found piles of dead crabs washed up. We also found our bait coming in untouched. However I snapped up just before high tide and about a couple of ours later my mate caught the end of my broken line. I untangled it and managed to retieve my line leader and weight plus a codling of just over a pound. My mate reckons it should be his fish but as I pointed out it was me that pulled it in and it was on my hook and line. It was the only fish of the session with 4 of us fishing. I suppose you can call it team work. |

I really think that the pounding of that pile driver has scared all the fish off. Imagine the shock on the sea bed when that starts thunping away. I think it will take a good few weeks for the fish to return after the work has finished. Thats my thoughts anyway, hope there wrong. |

I think that you have a good point about all the disturbance affecting the fishing, Southender.

it may have something to do with the pier but thinkin about it it dont seem to answer for the rest of the east coast as it is just dire at the moment all over as the sea needs to warm up a bit to bring them back closer, as you'll know even though cod are a winter species the water temp is still quite warm even though it will be freezing to us lol as it takes 6months to warm the sea and 6 for it to cool as even on the weather the temps always higher at the sea due to the sea temp and then it's called a spring run as its when they finish there spawning and the water temp rises as you'll notice fishing down walton pier b4 the xmas was great fishing and that was due to the winds being southwesterly which you'll know is warm air as plus sprats dont help as the cold snap could of took them out further as well so the cod have there food source, plus note that even the crabs have gone as a lot have died off or buried to deep in the sand so all the fishes food for comin close for is just not there at the moment but im sure it wont take much longer to sort out (if ever it does) |
