I had asked for opinions on the Orvis line tray a short while ago on another forum and although recommended I baulked at the idea of paying £39.00 for one (hey, I am a scotsman after all) and i saw this brilliant idea on another forum, so I thought I would share it with you guys.
If you want to make one yourself you will need one of these from IKEA
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60101063 a drill, some silicon sealant nozzles, junior hacksaw, a belt of some description (after buying rainbow suitcase straps I remembered I had an old daiwa wading/utility belt thingy lying around) and some epoxy resin ( I used Devcon 5 )
Here's the bits and bobs, total spent £3.97.
It really easy a doddle to construct, the first job being to cut 4 slits into the curved side of the stool, next take a hole cutter and drill out the recesses for holding your rod, next fit your belt of choice and then epoxy in the silicon nozzles. Job done.
Had a wander over the field today for a practice session and the line absolutely flew out of it, zero tangles. Although untried in the water as yet, I'm confident it will do the job asked of it when I'm wading in pursuit of Bass.
Tight Lines. |

I did that too, cheap as chips. You are goung to have trouble with the holes in the side and the nozzle length though. You dont want water in the bowl and knocked knuckles from the tips of nozzles.
Nice shaped bowl too. |

The holes shouldnt really be a problem as I rarely find the need to wade over my knees, good point on the nozzle length though, if it does become a problem it easy rectified with a stanley knife and more glue |

Nice post B A. That bowl is the bee's knees, should fit nicely round my developing beer belly. Perhaps the wife will get to go to Ikea after all |

Great shaped basket. I hope no ones come up with this before but a better way of creating the spines is if you drill a series of pairs of holes in the bottom, say 6 or 8 pairs of holes spaced over the bottom with the spacing between the two hole being about half an inch. Then get a pack of heavy duty cable ties and thread them through each pair of holes and tighten so that the ties stand vertical from the base of the basket. Snip them off to the required length and smooth the sharp end so you don't catch yourself. You will find that this is a more flexible system than the nozzles with the added advantage that the holes add drainage.
Cheers

Being fairly new to sea fishing and a thick Yorkshireman, could you explain what the basket and nozzles are used for please

To answer the last post the tray collects your line as you strip it, stopping it tangling around your feet when wading and dragging in the sand when on the beach. I'm told it also helps reduce tangles on casting too. Cheers |
